cold water plants?

Recommended Posts

i'm thinking about setting up a little tank in our kitchen, with a couple of mountain minnows. If i want to get plants for it, are there specific types that can handle the cold? Or are most of the general petstore plants ok in cold water? Bearing in mind it could get very cold in there

i was thinking about 8, didn't really mean two :)

it'll be a 1ft cube if i do it, would like a couple of those big leaved plants that come in little pots, whatever they're called. I know nothing about plants lol.

Only pond plant i know of is oxygen weed, there must be more choice than that?

There are heaps of plants that would be ok in cold water, they just grow slower.

Ludwigia ( i grow it outdoors)

Glosso

Java moss

Potamogeton crispus

Val (doesnt like it too cold though)

Lilaeopsis novae-zelandiae

Saururus cernuus

I've had a Java Fern in a bucket of water kept in total darkness under our sink in the bathroom for two months. It's still healthy and green. You CAN'T kill it!

Java moss never took off in my Koura tank, the tips grow, but it doesn't spread or attach.

I know this no longer applies to you, twinkles, but I can confirm that Java fern will handle cold water very well. I have a large plastic container outside on the deck full of driftwood I'm trying to sink (that's another story  ) but I also have some Java fern in there and it is surviving just fine. As said above, it isn't growing in the cold weather but I expect it will have a growth spurt in the summer.

So yep, I can recommend Java fern as a tough cold-water plant.
