lduncan
They don't require an external ballast to run, but there is a small electronic ballast in the base of the bulb. They are a high power / colour temperature version of the energy saver bulbs you can buy in the supermarket, which also have these ballasts built into the base. One possibility is that the (electrical) noise produced could interfere with other measurement instruments like pH meters, electronic temperature probs. Depends how well made they are. Ira
Anyone know if there's somewhere in NZ that might have them? Or a model number or anything like that? I've been thinking I might check with Lamp Specialists to see if they have access to anything similar.

Pies
I have seen 10000k PCs like that at placemakers here in wellington, unsure of wattage though. There are a few articles about them on RC. The bottom line (from what I read) is that don't provide particualry good value as the inefficient way that over halve of the tube length points at other tubes if mounted virticaly and less than 40% if mounted horizontally. Also its impossilbe to make an efficient reflector for them. Pies
