Robbie Posted October 4, 2004 Report Share Posted October 4, 2004 Ok, so here's the thing, I have a Fire Eel and all I feed it at the moment are live earthworms, wont take any pellets, flakes, small feeder fish, etc. I've read somewhere that they'll go for mussels. So I'm in Woolworths tonite getting some groceries and I get 1/2 dozen green lipped mussels from the deli counter. Now I have no idea what to do with them. Do I boil them (wouldn't that take away the fact the eel will go after live food), do I put them in the tank as they are, eg, straight out the bag, also, how do I keep them fresh. Mark Posted October 4, 2004 Report Share Posted October 4, 2004 To feed mussels to your fire eel just boil the mussels for a short while until the shells opens up. Remove the mussel from the shell and take out the seaweed bit if any. Cut the mussel into bite size bits and feed to your fire eel. Freeze the other mussels in a plastic bag but make sure they are seperated from each other as they will freeze together. Put the mussel on a plate in the microwave for twenty seconds to thaw it out. I have been feeding my fire eel mussels now for the last two years and she is in very good health. Just grown a lot thats all. Caryl Posted October 4, 2004 Report Share Posted October 4, 2004 I find freezing small amounts of things is easy if you put them into mini plastic ice block cubes, available at shops like The Plastic Box. Stops them sticking together. Might be worth checking out the $2 Shop or similar too. The ones I have are in trays of 15 squares. Each one is 2cm square.
