Vee
I took a poo sample from Izzy {blue tongue skink} to my vet for analysis. Results just back show pin worms. 3,000+ eggs per gram. My vet did a quick google of pin worms/lizards and about all she came up with was a sheep drench. Brand name Ivomec. Is there a procedure for drenching our skinks? What do others use? If anything. Being as I am very new to skinks altogether, any advice would be most welcome please. Cheers, Vee
kiwiplymouth
I don't know much about lizards but I do know about Ivomec. Ivomec comes in pour on and oral formulations. I'm picking that oral is what you will be needing. Be very careful as Ivomec is for worming cattle and is very concentrated: I.E only a few mills per 10kg. You will need no more than a drop on a pin head for a lizard. HTH.
Vee
Thanks for such a prompt reply Kiwiplymouth. Yes, as an ex farmer I am aware of what ivomec is/does. I would be relying on my vet to make the judgement call for dose rate etc. But I really want to know if there are alternatives? What others have used? Is there better choices? kiwiplymouth
Did a quick google search and came up with this 250mg Piperazine base as piperazine Citrate, per each teaspoon (5ml) I will let you do the rest.
Vee
Thanks again. I have emailed off to my reptile supply outlet because I have found there is a commercial product available in Aust. WORM-RID – REPTILE SCIENCE. Maybe it can be sourced for me here. What sort of reptiles have you got kiwiplymouth? Cheers, Vee

I'm concentrating mainly on fancy plecos but breed all sorts to help pay the food and power bill.

kiwiplymouth
WOW...you will have you hands FULL! I am impressed. Thanks for that. Cheers, Vee There are plenty more people out there with way more tanks that me. I do 20-30% water change on all my tanks every Sunday and it takes less than 2 hours. It's just a matter of being organised and having the right tools. Feeding and water parameter checks take no time at all and are part of my relaxation time after work. Vee
I did water creatures way in the past. Now I am happy to have dry-land creatures. Much easier. Mind you... I wasn't exactly looking to have 2 blue tongue skinks either...it just sort of happened! Cheers, Vee

kiwiplymouth
Before I get a slap around the ears, I happen to a very supportive wife who has also become addicted to the hobby and does a lot of the work when I am unable.
Vee
Oh..good for her. I wish I could say the same..that I had a supportive partner. But he is always down in the harbour playing on his boat!! Leaving me 2 skinks and 4 dogs for company. Cheers, Vee
DonnaM
Hi Vee, no idea if this is any use with your blue tongues, but I had to worm "speedy" (sick turtle thread) three times with oxfendazole drench 50/50. 0.1mls once a week. I can give you the vets email if you want as he specialises in turtles/ reptiles and may have an idea or two??
Vee
Hi DonnaM. If you can give me the vets email addy {or phone number} that would be super because I am sure my vet up here in Picton would be happy to make contact and ask advice. I know Christine {my vet} is keen to do the best she can for my skinks but this is completely new to her. Cheers, Vee
soloman5
I know someone who uses Ivomec for quite a few of her reptiles and she's never had a problem with it but after I read up on the internet about it for water dragons I decided I didn't want to risk something going wrong. I called a vet and he gave me Panacur which is considered to be safe and a widely used drug apparently.
Vee
My 2 blueys are being worm drenched with Panacur. My lovely vet Christine put a lot of time and research into the project and came up with a dose rate and Izzy is on day 2 of a 3 day drenching and I will start Bluey on day 4. It is 3 days of the Panacur, then 10 days off then another 3 days on. Then I will get another poo sample analysed. Cheers, Vee
