Mr McFish
Can I get plants out my pond and put them in my tropical tank and would there be a way of killing the snail eggs before putting them in?
Mr McFish
Nothing is in the tank and the plant is just oxygen weed. Was going to get a couple of lillies out but figured the roots are to big. I Want to set it up to get a couple of kribs.
lmsmith
You'll need to do a permanganate dip to kill snails. Go to the pharmacy and buy some potassium permanganate. Mix a 1/4 teaspoon with water (it will go a pretty purple colour) and put the plants in for a couple of minutes. It'll nuke them.
phoenix44
does KMnO4 work on snail eggs too?
lmsmith
Yup. It turns the jelly mass purple, and the actual eggs purple too. If you look really closely, you can sometimes see the eggs have burst.
phoenix44
uber cool! lol. thanks for that... i thought it only worked on snails.
Mr McFish
Thanks will go to the chemist tomorrow and get some. Do I treat them in a bucket or the tank?
phoenix44
treat them in a bucket that you aren't fond off. if you treat it in your tank it will turn the silicone brown. PS- your fingers will turn brown too - but that will fade in a few days. maybe more than a few days if you aren't nice and brown.
lmsmith
Also, don't stir with anything you want to keep. Go find a stick, or something. You may have to shop around to get permanganate, I got mine after going to about 4 pharmacies, it was about $5 for more than I'll ever use. It's a good thing to keep on hand, because you can do dips (for the fish) which will kill any external parasites.
Mr McFish
Ok just thougt about it and read somewhere that you can use bleach or is permanganate beter to use?
phoenix44
I'd use permanganate.
lmsmith
Hmmm. I don't like putting bleach in my tank. I guess it would work, but you'd need to do some serious rinsing afterwards.
Mr McFish
Ok will try and get some tomorrow but if they dont have any does snail rid work ok?
lmsmith
Sorry, I've never used snail rid before. I try really hard to breed snails, so it's unlikely I'll ever need it!!!
phoenix44
snail rid contains copper sulfate, so be careful when you use it.. I'm not sure if it would work on snail eggs either. Im sure i have a bottle lying around ill see what the instructions say.
whetu
treat them in a bucket that you aren't fond off. if you treat it in your tank it will turn the silicone brown. PS- your fingers will turn brown too - but that will fade in a few days. maybe more than a few days if you aren't nice and brown. You reminded me of another random use for potassium permanganate: Mix some with glycerine and rub it into your skin as a fake tan! True!! But make sure you wear gloves if you don't want the palms of your hands to be brown. Disclaimer: I only know about this because it's what my grandfather used to do in the old, old days before commercial fake tan was invented. I have never tried it myself and have no intention of doing so. Do it at your own risk (then post pics here so we can all have a good laugh). lmsmith
It's a carcinogen and poisonous, so I'll leave it to someone else to try!
alanmin4304
Which compound is a carcinogen? They are all poisonous as we are tryinmg to poison snails.
phoenix44
I am naturally gifted and am nice and brown  lol... no need to resort to fake tan ha ha. although my hair bleaches when i go to the beach etc. its all very tragic
suphew
Anything with copper into will kill them, you can get copper based medication. If you want to try an old school method connect some copper wire to each terminal of a 9 volt battery and have each wire bare and hanging in the tank, just make sure the wires aren't touching or they will short out. I've never tried it myself but have heard it works.
lmsmith
Which compound is a carcinogen? They are all poisonous as we are tryinmg to poison snails. Shrug. My bottle says 'Use caution: Carcinogenic". I believed it.
alanmin4304
If you mix pot. permangenate and glycerine it will spontaneously ignite.
whetu
If you mix pot. permangenate and glycerine it will spontaneously ignite. That would explain why my grandad was a firey redhead! Potassium permanganate (Condy's Crystals) has been used for generations to treat open wounds as an antiseptic. My Mum used to put it on our knees if we grazed them - we rarely complained to Mum about grazed knees because the treatment was worse than the injury! Ouch! http://dermnetnz.org/treatments/permanganate.html Apparently it's safe in dilute amounts but can irritate the skin if too concentrated. alanmin4304
It is a strong oxidizing agent like chlorine. If you make a small pile of condys and pour a drop of glycerine onto it it will oxidise the glycerine and burst into flames. We used to use it for fuses when kids.
