Loretta
Hi all I've had sqigly for over a year, he's a great pet, he loves his blood worm as soon as I open the lid hes up at the surface waiting for dinner, he's getting rather big and lives in a spaghetti container. How big will he get and can he be taught tricks.

Interfecus
You mean you have a spaghetti jar in the tank that he hides in? I'm not quite sure of the full size, but they need a three foot tank minimum when fully grown. That really depends on what you mean by tricks. If you mean eating from your hand, then yes. If you mean swimming through hoops, no. They seem to be reasonably smart for fish. Black ghost knifefish can live for up to 20 years so keeping one is a long term commitment. Hope to hear more from you. Any chance of some pics? I find that pictures don't do them justice since you can't see the motion but they still look neat. Daniel
they get bout 350 to 450 mm long fully grown not many reach this size .my knife would be bout 300mm long.they do not like any chemical treatments for whitespot etc as they dont have scales like a normal fish. Loretta
Yeah they have all been living together for ruffly a week I've had no hassels yet (touch wood) How would yoube able to sex the knife fish?
herefishiefishie
Hello Loretta, The cichlids when bigger will probably give the knifefish a hard time. Sexing these; The males head is thicker & larger, The males head is shaped more like a horse head than the females. The males eyes are more towards the top of the head. The females eyes are lower down, & to the front of its head, close to the mouth. If you grow up a group together the males are quicker growing, & tend to get to a larger size. Hope this helps.. Warren
Yeah, the cichlids might give the knife fish a bit of a hard time, at least until it bites them in half. A big knife fish can and will take a pretty big fish for dinner and they can be quite agressive. Remember the rule for nearly all fish, - if it will fit in another fishes mouth then thats exactly where it will end up! A fully grown knife fish can easily get to 450-500mm long and should have at least a 6 foot tank (500+ Litres).
Loretta
Well everything is going aok in the haven. The cichlids are not exactly bite size but... I say this with confidence as the knife fish sticks to himself and when hes out the other fish I guess are intiminated by him for some reason maybe they are jeolous because they cant swim like he does.
