Fish food help

I wasn't sure where to put this cos it can involve freshwater cold or tropical, marine cold or tropical.

I know someone who is doing a honors in food technology and he has been asked to produce a type of fish food. He has to actually produce it but i'm not sure if it'll ever get to be sold in shops.

So he needs to know if theres any type of food that isn't being produced at the moment, which theres is a market for.

I suggested a native fish food, cos i haven't noticed whether there is actually a food produced for natives.

Any other ideas??

if its for sale in a fish shop its a bit of a hard one.

your friend can attempt to enter the premium market and compete with tetra. or he can compete with JBL for specialist food.

the native market is very small, and is further restricted due to the size of NZ.

I would have suggested either the large fish market or the marine market, where there are other products for sale but not so many as to create a massive amount of competition. Hikari probably have the ideal niche for the monster fish market, however their advertising is almost non existent in NZ. Tetra has a big fish food but mainly only for cichlids.

You know what I would love to see, a prepared fish food which I can feed my BN fry which doesnt disolve and muck up my filters. It needs to be soft enough for them to eat quickly. I find zuchinni in the amounts I need to feed just makes a hell of a mess which results in me spending an hour each night cleaning filters.

there aren't all that many really small granules. I find a lot of fish don't really like flake that much. And there aren't all that many good baby fish foods in NZ - not that you don't have to mortgage your house for anyway. Maybe specialist baby food for different types of babies. Oh and the axolotl and tadpole food market is fairly open, there's one tablet I am aware of but it doesn't seem that flash to me, otherwise all frozen food which is great but expensive and somewhat messy

I haven't found NSL Discus ganules in a while been trying my Discus on this other type of colour enhancing granule..which is slightly bigger and Discus won't eat until I've ground them smaller with my mortar and pestol :o adds another 3mins to my morning chores!

But could I suggest more frozen prepared meaty meals? As far as I'm concerned there's only one type so there could be a market if your mate could make his cheaper

i agree, there's a market for smaller size food, or even ground flake.

If i could buy it ground up for fry i would, and even the adult gups can't manage the whole flakes, they like them crunched up a bit.

Since alot of people have community tanks of small tetras, danios, guppies etc a small flake food would be good

i don't know much about goldfish, but what about a type of food that comes in little goldfish-sized portions, so kids can feed them without overfeeding? Either little lumps of food (maybe frozen?) or a container with a dispenser like the ones you get for baby formula? Then it could be marketed for kids fishtanks.
