wolfy_nz
Well I am relativley new to the wonderful world of fish keeping, but what a satisfying hobby!!!!!!! We started by getting my daughter a couple of "Goldfish" (Fantail and Black Moore) and I think that may have been a mistake! LOL Then we took the plunge into tropicals and quite frankly I turned into a junkie! Started with a small bowl for the cw fish and then got a Aqua One AR380 (38L). Was given some very poor advice from our lfs who quite happily took my money and let me put 2 guppies, 2 platys, 2 bronze corys, 10 neons and 1 gold spot plec into the 38L after only 24hrs after setting up the tank. Needless to say we had casualties, but only 3 - 2 neons and 1 guppy. Ammonia hit the roof. But that is all sorted now and these guys now have a nice Aqua one AR620T (120L) to live in. Have been experimenting with a little breeding as you do with guppies everywhere (great food) and my corys having their first spawn yesterday. I am already looking for the location of my next tank............

wolfy_nz
Welcome.. how deep south are we talking? Invercargill? If so I am not surprised you got crap advice from the LFS. Yes I am in Invers....... I assume you have had unhappy dealings with ERP as well. At least Diacks are trying to broaden out into troppies, but there range is soooo limited. Am after more fish and unfortunatley if you want more than the absolute basics you have to deal with ERP.

Yes, like you we also started out on the AR380, had it running overnight then put like 10 million fish in it. Including a rainbow shark. I did query them on whether these fish were suitable and was assured that yes it would be fine to put them all in there. Not surprisingly, many fishy deaths followed. I still shop there (only because of the lack of competition around) and always leave annoyed when I see mum and some kids coming in to buy a tiny little goldfish bowl and proceed to cram 4 goldfish in it. Yeah I saw last time I was in Diacks that they had a limited range of tropicals.
