Dave+Amy
I'm thinking of renovating my Discus tank, I'm wanting Anubias nanas as the foreground/ lowest plant and I've got various Amazonian swords as the bigger background - so now I'm wanting a plant to cover a vast area between the Anubias and ths swords, being bigger than the Anubias but smaller than the swords. Don't really want to be planting hundreds of dwarf sag - wanting a plant that will spread by runners and preferably fast.
phoenix44
but dwarf sag will give out runners, and be fast growing... its the best option. that is unless you can get rid of all your plants, and get hold of riccia and get it to grow. phoenix44
why would you need to clean the sand out. with the runners, you wouldnt have to worry about gasses. Amy Ill send you some dwarf val if you like. freshly removed from my tank =D PM me your address.
fishbreeder
oh really, that sounds awesome. im gonna get some so i can plant out my tank for my female bettas. can mix hair grass, dwarf sag and glosso?/
alanmin4304
The sag will block the light to the hairgrass (needs good light) and the hairgrass will block the light to the glosso (needs even more light) I have a miniature sag called microfolia which grows to about 50mm tops whereas S. subulata can hit half a metre. I also have glosso (grown emersed) I can give you a small portion of each to try out . If you want to try PM me.
skaffen
that sounds like a good plant. i want to plant in sand but dont know how to clean the sand if i plant it out Sag tends to grow in clumps, you can still carefully manoeuvre a gravel vac around it to clean. If it's anything like my tank, you'll end up with more than you know what to do with It has a nice bright green colour. If you use substrate ferts, it'll grow about a foot high, otherwise it tops out at about six inches. Well, that's my experience with it anyhow. Dave+Amy
Hey Phoenix - received and planted the dwarf Val today, looks good already and now I'm just going to wait for them to grow and I'll pull up all my Indian Ferns and crypts to allow a partial lawn effect. phoenix44
those have been grown submersed and the others in my tank grow real tall and send flower shoots out all the time. as long as you supply the roots with nutrient, and the plant with good light, they will be happy as ever. the plant completely took over my tank, until i uprooted everything the other day. i was surprised at how fast and how well the plant grows. take a pic of the tank. PS - did the plant reach ok? I couldn't pack it like i normally do, as i didn't have a small box.
Dave+Amy
the plants were in great condition - got home and Mum had already opened it she was curious as to why a flat envelope was dripping water LMAO! Tank a bit over-run by plants atm, will take a photo once I've got rid of my Indian Fern and Crypts
