Adrienne
What filter media do you use with the filter. The media collects the bacteria in the tank and if it is turned off the media goes 'bad' in plain english. When you turn it back on after a while the 'bad' muck is released back into the tank and can 'poison' the water. Note I said 'can' not 'will'. Therefore constant running of the filter is better. I use a large pipette 'pointy plastic tube with a squeeze bulb at the end' for sucking up left over muck in my fry tanks. You could use one of those between water changes. fishbreeder
my filter consists of a large rectangle which holds carbon which is a carbon filter, water then goes through a black sponge to collect any extra bits, then over ceramic noodles. thanks adodge for idea about the pipette i was wondering how to clean the fry tank out. oh man he is scary all puffed up. i was settling my son back to bed. the tank is in his room and i couldnt see my fish so when bub asleep i had a look , no fish, thought hmmm where is he? so i turned on the light and must have frightened him and made him grumpy. he came flying out of the plants went to the back of the tank then charged the front with gills flared and fins flared then backed up and recharged. i quickly turned off light and told him i was sorry. but he was soooo scary. sorry for sounding so grumpy before.
