Caryl
Always remember we all have differing opinions. If you like it then good. Don't get upset if someone says they don't like it You asked for feedback and how to improve it so here goes... Your lovely rock pile doesn't match the substrate so it tends to stand out. Of course it doesn't help that it is newly set up so still startlingly white! When I looked at the pics, the first thing that hit me was that rock pile. That might be partly the way the pic was taken though. Is that an internal filter hiding behind the rock pile? It is good to hide as much equipment as possible but check the rocks aren't stopping a good flow of water from the filter outlet. The 2 plants, with red tips, in front of the shipwreck are tall bunch plants and would be better at the back of the tank. They also need to be closer together. What is the blue thing sticking up in the front? I can't make it out :-? Keep an eye on your fish size with that shipwreck. It looks like it has quite small holes. As the fish grow, some may damage themselves trying to swim into places they no longer fit, or get stuck. Have you got the gravel sloping slightly so it is a bit higher at the back than the front? Doing this provides an optical illusion and will make the tank look deeper than it actually is. It will also help some of the crud drop to the front for easier removal during maintenance. Overall you are on the right track and doing well for a first effort. As the plants grow it will look different and you will probably want to move a few things. That is half the fun of an aquarium. It is always changing and there is always room for improvement (unless you are Takashi Amano  ) Some people are good at landscaping - I am not one of them

lmsmith
Personally, it's not my style; I tend to go for a more natural look, rather than shop bought shipwrecks and novelty things. However, I appreciate that you've got live plants in there, it's awesome to have a good variety and it's so satisfying to see them growing and getting tall and healthy! If it were my tank, I'd tend to choose a theme; in your case, maybe pirates. Designing a tank around a theme, although it sounds completely over the top, can actually turn out quite cool. I've seen a picture somewhere where the tank was decorated like a candy land, with the backdrop pictures as jellybeans, ridiculously outrageous decorations, complete with a fake chocolate waterfall. It wasn't something I'd do myself, but it looked so awesome, so maybe you'd be interested in doing something similar with a different theme? It could become a pretty awesome art piece. Caper
Thanks Caryl, sure made a difference   I'm certainly no good at landscaping. Most of you know I don't keep real plants so that puts some people off right away when they see my tanks. So I say YAH to you for having real plants. But like it has been said, comes down to personal preference. I like your tank and I think the little "gateway" at the rocks is cute. Now please don't be offended though, not fussy for the substrate I can't exactly say what it is that puts me off about it...keep in mind this is coming from a person who STILL has red/white/blue gravel in a tank, UGH what was I thinking! All in all I think you did a great first time set up Caper
