Stu :)
Cool. Now how does one spot a male or female?
enzoom1
From what I've read older males have a large hump on their forehead and have brighter colors; Males also have a pointed genital papilla.
David R
Its certainly looks like its of the genus Vieja, but looks different to other young V. synspila I've seen. Much more colour, they don't usualy have such a well defined read head at that size. Regardless, its a nice fish! I'd suggest you try the cichlid forum on MonsterFishKeepers as there's a heap of really clued up people there who should be able to give you a positive ID. Stu :)
Well according the good folks over at Monster Fish Keepers it's a Veija Fenestratus http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=204259 Crud! It can grow upwards to 400mm / 16 inches! That'll teach me for getting an unidentified cichlid for my fish tank  Stu
