encinitas
Hey people, Do any of you here have sand as a substrate? If so, where did you get it? I'm thinking of getting some from an east coast beach up north, do any of you see any problems with this? (assuming precautions are taken to properly clean/sterilize the sand). David R
There will be crushed shell in it, which would be good for your rift lake fish but not so good for others. Also AFAIK its illegal to take sand from a beach...
whetu
Apart from crushed shell, the beach sand will also be very salty so will need to be rinsed very thoroughly if you're going to use it. Several people on here use sand as a substrate. They seem to buy it from landscaping places or use pool filter sand.
alanmin4304
I use river sand and it is great. The rivers down here are greywacke which is pretty inert.

alanmin4304
River sand is worn round but some other sands like plastering sand and filter sand are sharp
