Mel
I tell you from the start - About a month ago i was having problems in my community tank with what I thought was white spot, but now i don't seem to think it was, so far in total I have had 9 bristlenoses, swordtails, platies, mollies all up and die on me. After close observation I thought maybe it was my bricardi harassing the poor wee fishes - bircardi is not in there now, been taken out - and have had no fish die since. However, while i was in my tank (well hand in there ) i got an electric shock - the heater dial has always been really tight to turn, when we took the heater out the seal was very lose, took it back to the LFS and they kindly replaced it with a new one - thankfully still under warrenty Ok so my problem is, who thinks that it may have been the heater that caused the fish to die? or was it the bircardi? There was no signs of sick fish apart from at the start when I thought it was white spot and treated the tank for it .. but 2 weeks later fish kept droping dead with no signs of illness. And now since bircardi is gone it's been 1 week with no dead fish. Hope this all make sense I'm just at my wits end to know why they are dying. .. thanks to anyone that maybe able to shed some light on this situation. I guess i will just have to see if more fish die - since a new heater is in and no bircardis.
Caryl
Don't quote me but I would think the brichardi was the problem more than the heater. If it was the heater I would expect it to wipe out all the fish together. The faulty heater may have caused added stress to the fish if the temperature fluctuated, making them more of a target to the brichardi as well, and prone to white spot. Mel
Thanks caryl, yes the guy at the lfs didn't think it was the heater causing the deaths I guess i just want to convince myself that it was the heater and not the bircardi doing it - so I think i have my culprit

Mel
Is this the tank the discus are going in? Hi, they will eventually be going in this tank, but for now the discus will be going in my planted tank in my bedroom.
Adrienne
A heater in a tank will only give something a shock if it is touching something outside the tank at the same time, therefore a fish touching it alone or even touching a heater and glass would not get a shock as glass is an insulator. So if you had been suspended in air you wouldn't have had a shock either
