lambo
I have three gba's all the same age and all off the same person and they are about 5cm long now. One of them and only one of them has developed a browny/black spot on its side directly below its dorsal fin and it's about the size of the end of a pencil. Any ideas what this could be and if it would cause any harm to itself and/or other fish? Cheers
lmsmith
http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/can-you-breed-vt35139.html Could it be a mixed common/GBA? I have some that are the same except their spots are on their tails.
lambo
I hope not, that would really p*** me off as I bought them as gba's. The guy I bought them off had a tank full of them at the time. Having had another look at mine the spot is only half the size I originally described
Dixon1990
It can mean they have been bred with commons a while back, but i think it can also happen out of the blue i think.. 1 of my 5 Albino BN has a Brown Patch around its dorsal fin too
lmsmith
I've spoken to a few people about it and they have had it happen to fish when there has only been GBAs in the line for 5+ generations. I think it does happen sometimes like dixon said. BTW, you got them from someone different from me, thanks for telling me!
firenzenz
GBA's were developed from a few fish and as the others have indicated the brown spot which is usually on side or at the base of Caudal fin is common and a result of their history. It doesn't necessarily indicate recent hybridisation.
Snowman
I've bred probably a few thousand GBA's and from several pairs of all gold GBA's they all seem to occasionaly spit 1 or 2 with black spots, i've had them with up to 3 spots which on younger ones can look pretty cool, seems that when younger the spots are a dark black but as they get older they fade to a lighter colour. I started putting the spotted ones into a seperate tank to see if i could breed golden black spotted ancistrus but they spit mainly normal golds with the occasional spotted one the same as standard GBAs. Snowman
The fish you bought that has a black spot is as much GBA as any other GBA and if bred from should spit 99-100% GBA's
lambo
Well thats good to know. Thanks for all the great advice. It seemed very unusual for it to appear like it did though and it had me just a little worried, but I can now rest easy
Tropheus
Dont stress to much. My GBA pair are spitting out some fry that develope a brown/black spot. Guess its just natural. Humans get birth marks so we better not cull them
