lmsmith
My angels that have been eating their young and eggs everytime have finally got some to hatch, and have had them for a few hours without eating them. The mum and dad keep picking up the ones that get away in their mouths and popping them back on the suction cup they're living on. I hope they can get them to survive! Steph
How do you get angels to breed? e.g. temperature? and how can you tell between the two genders?
lmsmith
Warmer temps help hatch the eggs a bit quicker, but 24-28 is fine. Boys tend to have a hump in their heads, while girls tend to have wider bellies and straighter head profiles. However, it takes most people quite a while to learn how to sex angels. To know for sure, you have to watch them laying. A sure female lays eggs, and a sure male is the only other angel in a tank with fry. Watch out, because sometimes 2 females will act like a pair and lay eggs together
alanmin4304
It is easy to tell when you have a pair to compare the differences. The biggest difference is the shape of the bottom of the body from side on. The head lump as not reliable and realy only comes in old males, and then not always. caserole
Yes Alanmin is right, best way to sex them is in the chest part of the body. I can't remember which is which but 1 has a curved chest the other is more angled. This works when they are about 20-30mm in the body right through to full sized adults. Go to a local pet shop with plenty of Angels and test for yourself.
alanmin4304
It is hard to explain but I will try. The chest on the male runs at near 45 degrees and almost straight into the tail. The female chest is more parralel with the tank bottom and more at right angles going into the tail. The ovipositor is a lot fatter on the female.
