phoenix44
1.) Java fern or Moss WILL not grow in my tank. no matter what I do. I source the most beautiful java fern ever and all it does is go dark green and then gets holes in it. 2.)The anubias does well for a couple of weeks, gets me really excited and then dies out, only to sprout heaps of small leaves. 3.)but the biggest problem I have is with my dwarf val. I got all my plants at the same time, and planted them in the tank. the dwarf val on the LHS of the tank doesn't look happy - it looks skinny and small with only a couple of healthy leaves sprouting... the RHS of the tank is perfect. the val is awesome! can any one help me and tell me what is going on here... i mean ive got the same plants, in the same water, with the same fish and the same light in the same tank.... what am i doing wrong??? lighting on the tank is 2xT5 power glo; and 1xmarine blue and 1xplant gro (both T8's). The attached pics show my tank from the LHS to the RHS. notice the difference in the val... its shocking... many thanks to anyone who can help. Dave+Amy
how long have you had those plants for? my java fern initially went dark green but went back to normal after a week or so, just adjusting to your water I'm guessing? My anubias seems to be thriving, brought as a 3-leaf bunch and now has over 20 big leaves..looking quite cool, thought they were meant to be quite hardy plants? both my java fern and anubia handles lower pH quite well but the swords don't seem to like it..maybe it's your pH
phoenix44
ive had the java fern since july... lol... was a massive bunch - most beautiful thing ever. looks terrible now... it won't die out completely... but won't grow or anything... im ashamed to admit ive never once done a water test on this tank.....the fish seem happy so i just don't meddle with it, lol... alanmin4304
The good Sag from the petshop has probably been grown emersed.
phoenix44
they all looked the same when i got them - were from the same batch that came in from the supplier.. cause they were light green and springy when i got them.. then they went all small and flat as i expected them to.. then the RHS bit went beautiful and the LHS is the still short and flat. i treat the tank with flourish, plant gro, and flora pride.... does that make any difference? paekakboyz
I found that substrate size made a difference with dwarf sag... any chance the dwarf val is having trouble with the size of the pebbles etc?
phoenix44
the pebbles on top are larger to keep my clown loaches from over digging, but the main substrate is a finer pure black pebble. about a quarter the size of the stuff that is visible.... so the rooting is excellent. i noticed this when i was siphoning the tank - i pulled 1 plant out to see what was wrong with it, and it almost removed a square foot of substrate, lol... that's why im stumped with these... maybe alanamin was right in saying that the good plants were grown emersed.... bit weird that they segregated into such distinct groups... Dave+Amy
why don't you put the poor little under-developed plants on the LHS and the ones growing well on the RHS? BTW that is an excellent idea to put large pebbles on top - might look into that with my tank...
phoenix44
they all have such good roots i cant possibly uproot them without completely messing up the tank... the good ones are on the RHS and the bad / poor ones on the LHS. I just want to know what about the LHS of the tank is not conducive to plant growth - its very frustrating as all you fishgeeks can imagine
