male having trouble breeding

Hey ive got a nice red male that i have been trying to breed from but he is just being stubborn and wont build a nest! ive tried having the female in a jar in his tank for over 3 days and tried it for another 4 days with her running around inside the tank but he wont build a nest for the eggs, he did however embrace her, and let the eggs fall.

does anyone have any tips on encouraging males to build a nest? i even tried having a jared male in the tank aswell.

Hi diver21. I'm currently flicking through a book 'Aquarium Care of Bettas' by David E. Boruchowitz.

Quote..."The males bubblenest is a vital and distinctive part of the spawning process but males vary greatly on the details........Some nests are loose and scattered, while others are dense, rising 2.5cm or more out of the water. Large nests may almost cover the surface of the tank, while small ones may be tucked away tightly in a corner. Some males will build virtually no nest at all and still be successful........Many breeders find that something floating will soon have a nest built under it...........University investigations have shown that males prefer something that is round, about the size of a Grapefruit, and yellow in colour.......these characteristics correspond with dead leaves"....End quote

HTH :)

round yellow and size of a grapefruit? hmm. might have another go with him and a peanut butter lid, dont think the missus will be happy about me leaving the lid off the peanut butter though. I got polystyrene and floating plants in there which has worked for all my others, just not this one, will give that a try tonite though cheers

I wonder if red males prefer to be batchelors? I have a male red fighter and he never blows bubble nests, runs from other males and tends to just like to sit around all day long  Maybe red males are just more placid and less interested in their own species? I doubt introducing a female would perk him up at all - he'd probably run a mile!

ive got a yellow guy similar to what you just described but with mine he has to be in the same tank as the girls otherwise he sulks and his fins all clamp up.

also another problem i got with the whole breeding thing is keeping the fry alive after the fathers gone, ive been trying the technique where the tank is left alone for 2 weeks before starting the waterchanges, just wondering how soon and how often they do their water changes?
