Romeo
I find that my Koura leaves my plants alone (other than climbing all over them) as long as it's well fed. If I neglect to feed it for just ONE day, it'll tear all my plants up out of spite...

museeumchick
ofically a wierdo my koura is rather odd methinks in that it chooses to inhabit the corner behind the filter pipe (instead of the nice caves of driftwood at the other end of the tank) wierdo
Stella
What is it about behind-the-filter-pipe that is missing from your caves? I find they like their caves to be: dark (probably isn't dark behind the pipe) cray-sized (not keen on large open-plan places) with a small entrance-hole The hide in order to not be eaten by bigger things.... Or you could just pile the driftwood around the filter pipe....
museeumchick
the caves/hidey holes look fine to me, maybe it just likes to watch the pretty bubbles go past? as far as i can tell its happy, but i will be keeping an eye on it (its on my desk so how can i not)
Stella
yeah my Cran's are on my desk, lovely to have them right there to watch! (good procrastination tool ) Though actually.... from my desk I have: Far right: mudfish (3ft tank) Near Right: crabs and shrimp (tiny tank on desk) Near Left: Cran's bullies (2ft tank) Far Left: riffle tank (4ft) And below that: other mudfish (2ft) sigh.... MTS.....
Ianab
I had my little koura tank all nicely arranged with several bits of driftwood stacked up to make caves... Apparantly I didn't do it right as over the last few months the koura has pushed all the gravel to one side of the tank, and all the driftwood to the other :-? It now lives in the pile of driftwood, watching for food to be dropped onto the pile of gravel. Then it races out, grabs the food scoots back to it's 'nest' Ian
Romeo
LOL Ian I built some caves for my Koura, it completely ignored ALL of them and made it's home up against the glass beside the filter. They're bizarre little creatures. Luckily now it's in a more natural cave. I had a piece of wood, surrounded with gravel with a cave underneath. It pushed all the surrounding gravel to the other side of the tank, then back again. When I had the powerhead pointing directly at it's cave, it built a wall of gravel in front of the cave, then dug a back door - they're actually pretty clever ;s. Speaking of the filter, it seems that ever since I got my big filter it's always out and about. If it sees you it'll sprint up to the glass for a "hug". Stella
Then it races out, grabs the food scoots back to it's 'nest' Lair I love these stories of what everyone's crays have been up to! My cray has been very well behaved. He lives in the pile of rocks I made for him, exactly in the cave I expected he would be in. He has never damaged a fish, despite all the kokopu spending the lights-off period crammed into the pile of rocks with him! He landscaped for the first time recently, and I have had him for over a year and a half. Suddenly this huge mountain of gravel appeared outside the entrance to his cave! Then it slowly got spread out down the tank. There still appears to be a lot of gravel in the cave, but it is a hell of a lot roomier now. Not sure if he is doing a bit of DIY before he sheds next so that he can actually get out of his cave when he is bigger.
museeumchick
lol mine comes over for a 'hug' too, or maybe ite more about defending its territory from the big faces peering in
museeumchick
so i have aquired some bullies (commons) and many shrimp Yesterday they were in a temporary tank (rather too small for them) and there are a few less shrimp via bullie nibbling now theya re settling into their nwe place where the koura is king of the patch and I am immensely entertained by the koura's (so far unsuccessful) efforts to get a pincer full of bullie what fun! Good mission fellow fish collectors :bounce:
Stella
Glad they are all settling in so well! Sadly of the three whitebait we caught, the first one died in transit, the second one died on Day 2 and now, fitting the pattern, the third one is in the process of dying on Day 3 No idea why. It was looking perfectly fine yesterday Very disappointing. Oh and to top it off, my new Cran's bullies have got whitespot  sigh Not a great start: I have some guys from the DOC trout centre visiting my tanks and I on Friday... tinytawnykitten
Do you need a chiller?
museeumchick
I am thinking a chiller is beyond my budget, hopefully careful use of bottles of ice water will do the trick
