alanmin4304
If it is plistophora it is for all intents incurable but the fading colours in neons can also be an indication of being unwell from all sorts of causes.
Mo
hmm those pics dont really look like the tetrs i have.. in terms of colour. i have read it everywhere as well.. they would all swim nicely together and i just noticed one on its own. has been the case for a few weeks.. but im really not sure..?? what to do dont want to infect more fish.. but one fenitly looks battered.. its all intact but faded colour and tails a bit white? Mo
also another question? i dont have another tank.. if i was to remove them for the night? whats the bst thing to do??
lmsmith
Float them in a container in your tank. An ice cream container would be ok. Try to put an airstone in there if you can.
Mo
so put them in a container using the same water.. just no contact.. and the reason to leave it in the tank is to keep the same temperature? and an air stone? sorry excuse my ignorance.. Mo
could it be PH ?? I have a PH kit normally water is blue. I have tested it now and its a very light/slime green? Whats to do there?
lmsmith
That means your pH has gone down (more acidic). Tetras usually prefer lower pH, but a quick pH change could make them look pale and unhappy.
Mo
so leave them and monitor it? i have a yellow tube and blue tube .. acidic and alkaline.. no insturctions tho.. should i be doing something about this?? any suggestions as i would love to keep all my fish healthy.. thanks
lmsmith
a stable pH is better than one that changes. If it was me, I'd do regular water changes over the next week (daily) then twice a week after that. What's the pH out of your tap?
Mo
i think what really threw it of.. was that i did more than a quarter of the tank water change on sunday... i normally just do a qarter.. this time i went closer to half  so i guess give it a few more days and dont quarantine them?? i noticed a white spot on the tail of one of my swordtails.. and to be honest i think i got him like that.. but not sure now.. its all making me paranoid.. lmsmith
Fish can get whitespot from stress. Most fish cope ok with 50% water chnages, but it does depend on lots of factors like how often you do watch changes, what the pH of your tank water is and how clean your filter is. Do you have any other test kits like ammonia or nitrite tests?
Mo
nope i dont.. any suggestions on where to go? anyone here work at animates botany? maybe i can take a water sample there?? any other suggetsions?
lmsmith
Lots of petshops don't mind testing your water - ring around and ask. Have you cleaned your filter recently? Does your filter have carbon in it? If the carbon is old, it gets 'used up' and starts leaching toxic chemicals back into the tank.
Mo
no have not cleaned the filter.. and i dont normally have system to claning the tank really.. maybe i will do quarters from now on? and once or so a week? any other recommendations? lmsmith
I usually do 50% once a week, or 25% twice a week - more on highly stocked tanks or fry tanks. Of course, I know some people who don't change any water in their tanks - but this only works if your tank is perfectly balanced. In your situation, I'd be doing lots of 20% water changes - every second day. How big is your tank and how long has it been up and running? What else do you have in it? Caper
I have hang on the back filters. The cartridges contain carbon. I usually change them every 2 weeks, just the the cartridge with the carbon that is! Caper
