ryanjury
Last weekend we went to the beach and took some snorkling gear one of my friends took his new camera and these are some of the photos that he took... This is just off a random beach and reefs like this seem to surround Timor was awesome to see.. I was very lucky to avoid this shark.. Southerrrngirrl
Great photos. Close call with the shark though. You must have been swimming very fast to escape him

When I was in fiji, the fijian boys used to call me 'Vanilla" and kept going on about how chocolate is much better than Vanilla  Then after our day out snorkling they started to call me strawberry cos of the sunburn. They thought it was hilarious
Dave+Amy
that coral reef is so beautiful...won't last long if climate change continues! I'm hoping Dave shouts me a trip to either Fuji or New Calendonia for my 21st...definately want to give snorkling a go now after seeing your photos

ryanjury
lol Si glad someone else feels my pain Its all fun and games though, I think the photo makes me look more white than I am.. I'm hoping that my pasty whiteness and sun avoidance will mean im less likely to get cancer later in life.. Dave+amy I am unsure about the coral and fishes temperature tolerances.. We waded through rockpools with corals and fish in them when the tide was right out and they were uncomfortably hot (40ish) so take it the corals etc are quite hardy? It was an amazing experience I don't know why I didn't do it in new caledonia when I had the chance.. Instead I went to the aquarium and saw them all and stayed dry Have posted some pics of that in saltwater too.
Dave+Amy
Coral reefs only have tolerances around a couple of degrees, any higher then the dinoflagellates (symbionts of coral) die off so hence 'coral bleaching' without dinoflagellates = coral starves. learnt in my conservation paper that climate change will mean an increase of 5degrees cel over the next hundred years (which is BAD news for the Tuataras too)...they are trying some weird as experiments with Tuataras at the moment in prep for the future
