Deno
is it ok to put a single convict into an african tank. It's about a year old and is living in a semi aggressive community tank, so it's a peaceful fish

Afrikan
I have heard of the odd person keeping convicts and africans in the same tank, not something I would encourage. is it ok to put a single convict into an african tank. It's about a year old and is living in a semi aggressive community tank, so it's a peaceful fish Bear in mind that some fish may be peaceful in one tank however can adopt a different attitude in a different environment. It could swing either way, become aggressive or could end up getting dealt to itself. What sort of Africans are you keeping in the tank? Deno
first fish just gone into the tank a few minutes ago. A pair of electric yellows, and may get some placidochromis electras next
David R
Convicts come from areas with hard-ish water (mid 7's, not quite rift-lake hard), so it should be fine in that regard. They're tough as nails anyway so it probably doesn't matter if the pH is 5.5 or 9.5 as long as the fish is gradually acclimatised. As for it being peaceful, I find that hard to believe. How big is it?
Deno
believe me he is peaceful, has never hassled anything, probably cos he's been with these other fish since he was a baby. He's about 6cm
herefishiefishie
A single convict on its own can sometimes be an alright cichlid. May well be fine. Frenchy
David R
At 6cm he's still got a bit of growing to do, and I'd nearly put money on it that by 10cm he'll be a different fish. You might be right though, if he's not breeding then he might just not bother anything unless it bothers him.
ryanjury
They can be kept together I see it all the time, most petshops will have their africans in with convicts or something like that.. Your tank is probably big enough and the africans fast enough to keep out of the way. Quite a few people pick up aficans and add them to their mixed tanks and most of them setup a dedicated african tank and seperate out the others, the fish seem to do better and are happier.. Afrikan
I have seen one tank in particular with a mix and not one fish had fins that were perfectly intact
