tukituki
Hi, I setup my 2 fighters for breeding 2 days ago, they were released yesterday afternoon and we've just notice them spawn. The female released the eggs and the male caught them in his mouth and put them in the bubble nest. All is good. My question is when do I take out the female? and how long should I leave the male in for? Thanks.
Guest
You take the female out when they finish spawning and leave the male in there until the fry are free swimming. congrats on having them spawn
tukituki
thanks Cam! i'm very happy they have spawned! so i should take her out now as she's hiding in the plants at one end of the tank, he is under his cup at the other end? Guest
yip, other wise he'll attack her and may even kill her.
tukituki
she's gone back to her other tank, cheers.
Guest
good luck and keep us posted on how they go.
tukituki
the eggs have hatched and you can see the little fry (who seem motionless), at times fall to the bottom of the tank, our male scoops them up and puts them back in the bubble nest. when is the right time to feed the fry and when should they become mobile? we'll remove the doting dad then eh?! Guest
It sounds like he's a really good dad. My fry would always wiggle and get out of the nest and stay on the bottom and the male couldn't keep them up. I think they become free swimming in about 48hours but I can't remember as it's been 5 months since I've breed mine (I need to get rid of some  )
Aaron-Betta
Remove him when the fry can swim horizontally.
tukituki
thanks, some are able to swim up and down but none horizontally yet. yes he seems to be an awesome dad, i'm very impressed! shall i start feeding them once they swim horizontally? cheers. Aaron-Betta
what you are using as the starter food?
tukituki
a liquid fry food got from LFS
Guest
I would feed a bit before they're free swimming as when they're free swimming they've got food straight away (thats what I do anyway)
Aaron-Betta
I usually put drops of liquid fry food in before the parents even spawn, it feeds the infusoria already in the water which the fry will feed on. ( they dont actually eat the liquifry) You can try some egg yolk mixed into a paste. It's messy and will need water changes often (which you should do anyway) but its a good starter food. Also microworms are good, they stay alive in the tank for ages. Good to get them onto bbs as soon as they can take it.

It's easy to just grab a cube and chuck it in.What size tank are the fry in?
tukituki
i think the tank is 32L. i have the liquid fry food, frozen blood worms, some sort of dried worms & the usual flake food (as well as various bottom feeder foods), anything else i'd have to get tomorrow!
