Dixon1990
They are fully aqatic- no land needed, and Kepping them on Gravel isnt a good idea as they swallow it and it can block them up They do well on sand, with the temp below 20. The only Tankmates i have found that are suitable are small snails and native freshwater shrimp although they usually get eaten.

That's good to know about the gravel,i had some years ago and had them on gravel. But never realized that they could swollow it.Found out the hard way they could swollow gold fish.I thought they were to slow

Nana Luke
I've been advised that gravel is OK as long as they are bigger pebbles that Axies can't swallow. Sand stresses them out apparently because they can get a grip on it and it freaks them out, same goes with a barebottom tank.

I've always heard bigger stones/gravel that don't fit in their mouth.
Dixon1990
When i move my 3foot axie tank imm covering most the sand with flat stones with 5cm+ diameter for that reason.

I reckon that'd look quite cool. I'm keen to get an axie. just gotta find room for a bigger tank. There's a couple in the LFS. Hopefully they are there by the time i have a tank set up this weekend! haha. Cos you don't see them that often down this way.
DeAnimal
Sand - ok but can be messy they still may eat some and sand can get gas build up, not so bad if gravel vacd or heavily planted Rocks- ok but really need to be bigger than will fit in there mouth which isnt small, and imo a tank full of large pebbles is gonna collect all the muck Sand under rocks would only make cleaning even harder and more chance of getting gas build up i would of thought. I just use bare bottom tanks, with a couple of rocks and oxygen weed added when in breeding season, seems to work for me!
