Deno
I have made a start on setting up my 6 foot tank. Got some silica sand today for the media and added some awesome rocks. Thats it so far, but I reckon it looks pretty good already. Hopefully I can figure out how to get some pics going now.

Afrikan
Looks great Is this for african cichlids, I thought thats what you were looking at getting? Silica sand looks excellent, not sure if it will buffer tho, everything I have read states that silica sand is chemically inert...??
Deno
yeah thanks Ryan, I'd like to come for a drive to visit. Thursday or Friday would be good I think. I got a few days off work
Deno
thats not what I wanted to hear Afrikan, I was reading a discussion on another forum and silica was a media they were recommending, I hope they knew what they were talkig about
ryanjury
I thought it was neutral too but others have claimed it isn't I guess the actual definition of silica sand may have been distorted worldwide? I have a bag here that I will use in a tank eventually and test it out see what happens, thinking it was inert I was going to use it in a planted community tank (thought the white substrate would look different with plants) with dwarf cichlids etc but now that it may not be might leave it until ive done some research.. Yep thur/fri might suit send me a pm to arrange it there won't be many tanks running only 4-5 if my condensing goes to plan...
Afrikan
Awwwwwwwwwww hell... I googled about silica sand and alot stated it was inert
Deno
great, might have to dismantle already lol. Oh well the sand will look good in pot plants maybe. It looks real nice tho
ryanjury
There is no reason why you cant add some coral sand or argonnite as well as the silica sand it would mean you have to buy less of the expensive stuff and would mix with it relatively well
Shannon
I have silica sand in my tank yep its inert so I added coral sand on top and it works fantastic also helps stop the finer silica sand come up when cleaning the tank.
