matthewY
Wondering if anyone have feed rolled oats to discus? I read in afew places that it enhances the blue in a discus however no one really goes into detail into saying if they have to do anything special to it. So at the risk of sounding dumb... anyoen know what needs to happen to the oats from the time it leaves the pack to the time it gets into teh tank, ie: quantity? does it need to be cooked, rinsed, crushed etc? also, any issues with it changing the water? cheers Matt
Faran
I would only feed oats if mixed in with home-made discus tucker. I've never tried it or heard of it being done but hey, it's not much different from the wheatbix we put in out discus tucker for stability so why not? whetu
Dried rolled oats will swell to many times their original size when soaked in water, so I would make sure they were soaked before going in your tank - if the discus swallowed the dry oats they could get a tummy ache. Also where are you reading about the oats as discus food? Oats in the U.S. tend to be much more refined than the oats we have here. They grind theirs up a lot finer - I think theirs are more equivalent to our instant oats. Perhaps the reason the oats cause the colouring to be more intense is actually because of some added nutrient? I'm pretty sure in the US they add vitamins and minerals to all their breakfast cereals, whereas our rolled oats are just the oats with nothing added. tHEcONCH
I'd just give them a good quality varied diet including plenty of blood worms and JBL 'cichlid' and 'discus' and so all the colours are good.
matthewY
found it here: http://forum.simplydiscus.com/archive/i ... 25780.html and on the list here http://forum.bidka.org/showthread.php?t=3018 maybe if it increases in size then I wont be adding it... just a thought though Thecounch, do you know if the JBL foods have any colour enhancers and if so, would they have effect on blue / green? most food seem to have something along the lines of Astaxanthin which from reading, only enhances red
shadowfax
i put some oats in a little bit of water & left them for a day after someone said to me not to feed oats to my rabbits because they swell up. after soaking for a day the was no swelling but the water had gone very milky. so i guess you should soak them to soften them up & stop your tank clouding over. Zabman
I found some little grub thingies in my weet-bix, so fed them to my angels - they loved them! Wonder if you could do something similar with oats?
matthewY
little grub thingies ? umm I can always find grub things but dont know if I want to feed them to my discus....
