Lucas
How do I clean this thing?! It has noodles at the bottom, stiff blue foam then bio ball thingys (smaller than marbles) then floss at the top. Since it has no separate trays, what is the best way to clean this without upsetting the bacteria?
purplecatfish
A good trick is to have the noodles in an bag like you get mandarins or onions in. Then you can lift them all out in one go and rinse them in a bucket of tank water.
Ira
Yeah, putting the noodles in a bag is helpful. Otherwise just dump it all into a bucket of tank water, swish it around, scoop the noodles out and put them back.
Simian
How do I clean this thing?! It has noodles at the bottom, stiff blue foam then bio ball thingys (smaller than marbles) then floss at the top. Since it has no separate trays, what is the best way to clean this without upsetting the bacteria? Are the noodles just plain ceramic or are they porus? If they are the porus bio media type like siporax they should be just before the wool. This will stop them clogging up.
Simian
IMO bio balls in a canister are a waste of time for biological filtration, they have a poor surface area compared with sintered glass (the porus noodles).
Lucas
The bio balls fill at least two thirds of the container. The noodles are ceramic, but they aren't glazed, so must be porus. First to get water is the noodles, then Foam, then Bio balls, then wool.
purplecatfish
I set my filters to go: foam - wool - noodles. I ditch the wool every time I clean the filter and I find that the noodles hardly ever need cleaning.
