Dixon1990
Do setups like this work? http://www.trademe.co.nz/Home-living/Pets-animals/Fish/Fishbowls-tanks/auction-152547731.htm
tHEcONCH
Yes and no - they are OK for a couple of small fish, but that is about it - no corals etc.
Dixon1990
Would they be alright for a few corals if a sump was added with a skimmer?
fish-unit
dont waste your time, You would have to change everything for corals Get a RSM if you want corals
fish-unit
Would they be alright for a few corals if a sump was added with a skimmer? Or If you are really intrested in it, you could add a HOB skimmer and I know of someone who sells hang on 150 watt halides REAL nice units just clips onto back of tank
Dixon1990
Ohk then.Just wondering.
tHEcONCH
Would they be alright for a few corals if a sump was added with a skimmer? No. Dixon, there is really no way to short-cut with marine. You have to buy the right equipment first time around. As fish-unit says, an RSM is about the minimum you will need. Converting freshwater tanks costs about the same, so if you are looking to get into marine you will need about $1000 per foot.
Dixon1990
Well i geuss il never have one then,Il stay with freshwater

Dixon1990
No i dont think i want to lol, I wouldnt evven spend More than $1000 on a decent freshwater tank let alone a Small reef. So what would i need for a Fish Only tank? Is this a huge amount of money per foot thing too?
tHEcONCH
The main difference is not having to buy corals, but the tank requirements are broadly similar anyway, perhaps with the exception of lighting. The main reason people keep fish-only tanks is so that the can keep fish that would otherwise eat corals - it isn't really a budget option. Dixon1990
Then that means i can stay with my freshwater then lol. Might be an option later on if i can afford and convince dad to go halves in a redsea max lol.
tHEcONCH
You might not be able to get into it now, but don't give up on it altogether. Work hard, and they'll come a time when you can afford one.
Dixon1990
Maybe next year if i work fulltime and dont do a course or go to uni straight away. But a RSM would look good at my parents new bar
tHEcONCH
Probably not a good environment for a marine tank!
Dixon1990
haha, your probably right there lol. It would be a way for me to get it cheaper though lol.
tHEcONCH
Wait a day or two and I'll post up details of an 18" or thereabouts set-up you could do for about $500 - its basic, but if you are disciplined it will work.
