Dixon1990
I have a 3foot tank i am going to grow out some small discus(around 3cm will be bigger by the time i get them) in a couple weeks to get them ready for a larger planted tank, What do i need in the growout tank? Ive got a heater and a filter(what is best? A sponge filter or internal filter),What else do i need?
tHEcONCH
If you want best results then you need to feed a lot and do lots of water changes, so a simple glass bottom tank makes that easier. Make sure you get a couple of extra babies, because a couple will very likely perish along the way.
Dixon1990
Ok, Sponge filter or internal power filter? And Daily water changes? And any specific Ph level? I want to get this right.
tHEcONCH
The filter doesn't matter much because you will be syphoning out all the uneaten food from the bottom of the tank and therby doing regular water changes every day. You are in Christchurch, so our tapwater is fine both in terms of Ph and hardness.
Dixon1990
So just an airstone or 2? What temp would be best? And at what size could they be moved to a 250-300L planted tank with tetras and catfish?
tHEcONCH
I'd still use an internal power filter, or better still an external cannister because that makes cleaning really easy. I'd set the tank at 29 degrees, and preheat any water that you use for changes to the same. You can move them once the get to about 5cm (although it isn't critical) so long as the tank you move them to is also clean and the same temperature (in fact I'd transfer a lot of their water with them). Dixon1990
What size tank did you use Navarre? And how big di you raise them to in it?
Navarre
used a 2 1/2x 2 ft tank 2 heaters ( I have had one fail in the past and lost about 20 fish) had 10 discus and got them at about 4-5cm they put size on quickly and are now about 12-15 cm across body. Still have 1 small one though that started out as runt of group and is still smallest but is the boss now. Def. holds his own. Luke*
hey dude you want the ones discussed here http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/best-s ... 29750.html far easier to clean than cannisters or internals so you do it more often. I use to clean mine daily when I changed the water. If you have daphnia they love the gunk you squeeze out
