FreedingFrenzy
I went to HFF today and looked at their range of fishtanks and I was actually a little disappointed - besides their AquaOne fish tanks with the warping stands they only had the Jewel tanks (that were in my price range) but not the size that I needed. So I was wondering if anyone knew any other stores I should try? I was thinking about possibly getting a glass Euroview tank and I would appreciate any advice/mishaps anyone has on these? Or do you experienced people out there just think I should go for a plain glass tank that I can get for cheap off trademe? My bf has offered to make me a stand out of metal which will be good. I just don't know what do but I have around $500 to spend on a 200L tank and stand... Help? :-?
David R
Best bet would be a custom made glass tank tot he dimensions you want, and a wooden or steel cabinet made to measure. $500 may be pushing it if you want a nice customwood (or rimu) stand, maybe try trademe. spoon
i have a euroveiw 90 its a great wee tanks its 3ft long but is extra wide and deep holds 204l only problem ive had is condensation leaking out the top front of my tank and running down the front , This is only because my floor is not completly level so the front of the tank is a lil lower than the back otherwise it wouldnt be a problem, another thing to watchout 4 is lights make sure u get full length tubes , 3ft not 2ft it may be a lil more $$ but u will kick urself later if u decide to go planted , why im telling u this is that a lot of the lite fitting thatr fit this tank and clicp on the ends will only have 2ft tubes ur better off getting 3ft even if they are just sitting on top (i use the corner cutouts on the glass lids 4 feeding aneway)
Ianab
Personal preference Buy the biggest plain glass tank you can and get your B/F to weld up a decent stand. I'm into woodworking not welding, so I make mine from wood, but I still have a steel one my Dad build me maybe 30 years ago. Doing it that way you should be able to set up a 200l tank for about the $$ you want to spend. Lights, filters and heaters can be mixed and matched depending on what you want to keep. A home made light hood with a couple of compact flouros can be made for a few $, it will work fine if you aren't trying to grow plants. You can start with a basic filter and upgrade later (or double up) as your fish grow or you get more. Ian
FreedingFrenzy
Thanks guys After reading these and talking it over with my parents and my bf I've decided to purchase a 3 ft tank and have my bf weld together a nice metal stand for me. Hopefully it turns out alright! Fingers crossed
David R
Good idea, just make sure he gets the top level!!
henward
for 500, trade me is the best try your luck, be patient, i found good deals there, i have seen nice 500-700 litres with stand and all stuff included for 500 to 600, sometimes you gotta drive far but hey, its still a whoping deal! or, get your bf to make a steel stand, buy a brand new tank and make a steel stand custom for it becareful to make sure you do it properly and evenly, no room for error i dont think with making own stand. though im told its not rocket science wtih people with the know how, which i dont:D i bought a 1200 litre with stand for
FreedingFrenzy
Wow thats a good price for that deal... I was tempted to buy a few off TM that seemed like quite good deals but my main problem was space in my room... And I didn't want to buy a stand that would warp
Naz_Nomad
HFF or Pupuke Aquariums on the North Shore will order the right size Jewel in if you ask. Ask to see their catalogue. Jewel are great aquariums. I run a 180litre with the rock backgrounds and all. Or go see Brent at Pupuke anyway - he has a tank maker who will make whatever you need and a stand maker who will make the stand.

And around how much would a stand cost to be made by a stand maker? I mean, its not that I don't trust my bfs handywork.... Okay, it kind of is. Naz_Nomad
My Jewel 180 cost me about two thousand dollars, but it is complete with stand, lid, lights, heater, filter and media. Actually, less than that - it came to $2100 all told with the tank and all the other gubbins I bought at the same time, and I did buy a lot, with fertiliser, gravel, bits and pieces, plants etc. I did get a nice three foot tank with lid and stand from Pupuke for about six hundred bucks. If you buy like that, you then have to consider the cost of everything that makes your set-up complete, filters, lights etc. I haven't a clue how much a stand or tank will cost to make, you'd have to ask Brent that - he's in the phone book or posts occasionally in the commercial trade and exchange section. It's always worth asking, though you'd possibly get a better deal approaching a cabinet maker and/or tank maker yourself without going through a shop. Ask anyway, Brent's a nice chap and won't bite too much.
evil_elmo
we look at the aqua one euroview 90 which is the 3ft size at animates. The price isnt too bad, tank was $299 and stand was $250, so a total of $550 but i'm sure if you ask them nicely they would give you a discount, plus if you are a member of their club you get $10 back when you spend $300 euroview series looks great setup with the curved glass corners and the black cabinet looks classy lol
FreedingFrenzy
I was thinking about it but my boyfriend is really set on making me the metal stand, I even hinted at me just buying that tank and stand because I work at an animates store... But he seemed pretty gutted when I suggested that so alas he gets to play with big dangerous toys

markoshark
I don't think my 630L glass tank will end up costing that much!! Never ask how much salties pay for their tanks Try Origin Aquatics, they can order tanks in for you and will probably be cheaper..

Nana Luke
What's staff discount like at animates? It would probably work out a bunch cheaper! That could be the excuse to your BF, "It'll just work out cheaper"
FreedingFrenzy
Yeah, it does work out a lot cheaper with staff discount. I'll let him have some fun and if it doesn't work out then I know I always have that option. I'd feel too mean telling him I don't want it anymore as he's already worked out a day to do it with his buddy, has drawn designs up and worked out everything.
