The south african gangs are mostly cape coloureds (mixed race people) who have been shafted by a white reigeme [apartheid] and are now being shafted by "a black reigeme" (his words not mine!), they are at the bottom of the poverty line and going to prison is actually an improvement in their living conditions. The american gangs looked like a bunch of dropkicks running around in what could have been a nice neighbourhood trying to emulate what they see in hip hop videos. They hardly seemed under-privileged in comparison to the south african gangs upbringing, and any poverty would seem [to me] to be self-inflicted by laziness or bad decisions.
