Eddieb
Hi Folks It appears my Aquaclear 50 filter has died tonight, only ~3 months old. Will be taking it back to point of purchase to discuss warranty details. In the meantime on advice from my sister and brother in law I've set up a crude filter system with my filter inlet pipe stuffed down the centre of a cut down water bottle surrounded by the noodles, carbon and filter sponge from the filter unit. A bubble stone is down the filter inlet pipe and apparently this creates a venturi effect which pulls the water through? I can't get a new filter in till tomorrow night so hopefully it will keep my babies alive till then. I went round all the supermarkets looking for water pumps or even tanks I could buy to scavenge the filters from but they all have nessecary parts missing. tinytawnykitten
My Aquaclear 30 did the same thing and I was so bummed and then took out all the media and gave it a good wash in warm water and cleaned out the pipe bit (inlet?) and put it back together and it worked just fine. Give it a go.
jeash007
water changes every day might help until you can get a replacement
Scuba Sam
I had no filter for weeks on one of my tanks - no problems - tank was mature, and I just used a new filter when I started filtering. Mind you tank was heavily planted and understocked. Good luck!!
Eddieb
Well I took the filter back to the shop, and they were going to ship it back to the supplier, with no option of a replacement in the meantime. The staff memeber then went and spoke to someone else, came back and then took my filter into their work area. Removing the motor from the filter (I didn't realise you could do that) and a good cleanout with a bottle brush and away it went again. It seems the magnets were just full of poo. Ianab
The DIY filter should do some good, as long as there is some water flowing over the media it will do something, and it will also keep your media alive untill you get the new filter. Cut back on the feeding and do some extra water changes if you have to. I would also consider buying a cheapo filter and bung some of the media in that. Never hurts to have a spare filter running in a tank. I have 5 tanks and 8 filters of various kinds. So in the event of a failure I can shuffle things around to leave every tank with some sort of working filter. Also very handy when setting up a new tank.
