Loopy
I just got these 3 The guy who sold them had no idea what they are except "zebra cichlid". Shall i just accept them as that or can someone elaborate a bit? What about sexing them? I would hate to think of walking up to the tank for weeks and saying "who's a pretty boy there?" every morning and finding out it is a female!
ryanjury
Top 2 are zebra's probably hybrids so dont bother doing what others do and find pics all over the internet with random names and match them up.. Any chance of a better pic of the bottom one?
Loopy
i'll see w i can do... got a busy day ahead but they have relaxed a lot now and have coloured up nicely in their tank. they might co-operate with me a bit more now

ryanjury
Man thats one weird looking fish I can see blue dolphin in it but its not pure the shape is wrong.. Id go for a hybrid also sorry generally when you buy things as "blue zebra" that is all they are blue zebra's no sc. name etc it is good to post pics and see if anyone recognises them but I dont.. That is just my take on it maybe someone else has a differing opinion
Loopy
thanks for that. Would be interested to hear anyone elses thoughts? I think he is pretty in a Quasimodo kind of way. I wonder if he knows he is "odd"?
Gannet
blur dolphine x yello lab??? prety easy to say dont breed ne of them
ryanjury
Id say not crossed with yellow I don't see any yellow in that one, certainly weird especially the mouth.. Oh well doesn't really matter what the cross is as long as you know its a cross and dont attempt to breed from any of them or rename them and sell them on like others have done! broms2
just a question about the hybrids, if they cross breed in a tank then whats stopping them cross breeding in the wild?
ryanjury
Geographical seperation Ie the fish live in different places, also it is believed that there are enough males and females of each species and there is alot of room there also the lakes are pretty big places compared to our little tanks where the fish pretty much have no option but to breed with whatever as they're all locked up together.. I am not sure any of these are valid suggestions but its what I think sounds feasible.. Of course like everything else it could happen and probably does to a small degree, hopefully the collectors know what they're doing and hybrids do have different traits.. malawiman
First two looks like the blue zebra and pretty sure they are. Third one does not look like anything I ever saw, might be hybrid and most possibly is. Also chance slipped through the system as imported juvinile and is something we don't know. Treat it as unknown/ hybrid and don't breed from it. Will be interesting to know the mix though, like Ryan said you can see dolphin in there. Loopy
Thanks for all the thoughts folks. you can rest assured that breeding was never my intention with these guys. I got them off trademe. There was no picture and the seller didn't know what they were so it was like a lucky dip and i like a good mystery. I just wasn't expecting to find that big fella to be quite as mysterious as he has proven to be! I have never had african cichlids before so these are my entry level get-to-know-them fish. MY! what big teeth he has!!!
