Caryl
There is a difference between what temperature fish can live in and what they prefer to live in. Guppies are quite happy down to 18C. They will stay alive in lower temps for short periods but it is not good for them. They would be fine outside in ChCh over summer but bring them in when it gets colder.
cesarz
I have kept my guppies in the pond all throughout late spring till early autumn in Wellington, The temps dip down to 18C but average at 20C. Not all guppy varieties can survive these temps, as a rule the smaller the tail the hardier it gets.
John Rimbauer
I've kept them in a cattle trough over summer, and they were healthy and colourful as - perhaps too healthy, as the pond attracted the attention of a kingfisher... As they spent a lot of time around the surface, they gradually thinned out until none were left.
Scuba Sam
When I was eleven, I had guppies in a bucket on the back porch in the middle of winter - bred happily etc, BUT I was living in tropical North Queensland!! Have had guppies indoors without a heater here in Northland - seems ok if filtration is good enough. Not sure I'd try it in Christchurch - heaters cost so little now. Ianab
If you want some little fish that can live in an unheated tank all year round then try some White Cloud Minnows. About the size of guppys and really hardy. Will breed in a planted tank with no special care.
