Adrienne
Is it okay to have these in the same tank, if not what other sort of algae eater could I use with the discus. Interested also in what other sort of fish people keep successfully with their discus apart from cardinals and rummynose.
Cheesejawa
Have heard of lemons being kept with discus. Much cheaper than rummy noes or cardinals as well. As for algae eater BN would be fine or otos.
ryanjury
I have heard of some algae eaters sucking on the side of discus and hurting them I think bristlenoses are sweet but unsure on others..
Faran
Any type of algae eater can develop a "taste" for discus slime and can become a nuisance and may need separation. I've had this happen with Bristlenoses and most recently Ottos. Just keep an eye out and remove the offender when you see it happening. For the record, I've only seen superficial damage that was gone within a day but if this happened to an aquarium where the fish weren't checked on very often it could become serious. There are many fish that are suitable tankmates for discus. The main things you should pay attention to are temperature and speed. You want something that will happily live at 29 degrees and will not move so fat that they disturb or outcompete the discus for food. Adrienne
Exactly - so what sorts are there apart from cardinals, rummy noses. I have searched the internet but when I check compatibility not much matches.
jolliolli
i've never had a problem with discus and bristlenoses
The Great White Hand
Hi I've just put one of my ottos into isolation had turned into a discus mucus sucker. My theory is as my discus (2 pairs) have been laying eggs like crazy, their mucus coat thickens and they become more attractive as a source of food (for discus fry of course) coupled with the reduction in algae in tank (increased courgette and plecochips to offset a bit). Anyway, one otto (of four) off to new home (maybe to look after the plants section at Organism). Regards, TGWH
Faran
Agreed TGWH, it happens. Had 2 of 6 ottos do the same over the last few weeks. They're now swimming with the guppies
