Tank sizing for Betta's

Recommended Posts

I have my male fighters in 300x300 tanks with a center divider, so two in each.

I've been looking at the jar setups and reading from all sorts of betta sites and books. I'm wondering if that's enough room for them to live in.

They seem happy enough and flare at each other through the divider, but I keep reading that they need more space .. yet see them jarred also.

So much conflicting opinion out there .. thought I'd ask here as there's some pretty clued up betta people here.

im not clued up by an means as im only just starting out with betta but...

How I will set my betta up, is my main betta(I have 2 breeding males) will each have thier own tank, which are 400 X 400 pretty much, planted, substrate, heater and spongefilter so they have a nice home.

The offsping males I am not keeping will be jarred/hung in my other tanks until ready to go to there new homes so it won't be a perminent thing here, but may end up being jarred in thier new home anyway as I am a small betta breeder and only currently have 2 boys.....

I don't "like" having to keep them in jars etc, but for alot of people they can't actually have a tank for each male betta, especially if you have say 400 fry, 250 or more of those are male! Lol....

When I was breeding fighters I used to put them into a setup I made so they could see each other and regularly "show." This is what you are doing with jars but it can be hard work. I made a tank slightly smaller than 2ft x 2ft with stainless steel mesh on the bottom and it sat in a 2ft x 2ft tank. Excess food and droppings fell out the bottom and was siphoned off and a water change was done by lifting the inside tank and letting it go. The internal tank was divided into sections about 100mm square. This takes a lot of the work out of it and as Amazonian said you need to have them showing to develop good quality finnage. Some of the bettas around now would be way better than what we had available then so there is every chance of breeding realy good quality now.

I thought they would have enough space for a semi permanent home in there , but thought I'd double check.

I've only got 6 males at the moment and they are all in the 150x300 sectioned areas. The tanks have substrate, are lightly planted, filtered and look quite cozy. The boys can sit back in the greenery or 'flex' to each other as they wish.

They seem happy .. active and inquisitive, so I guess that's the main thing.

Thanks for the advice.
