Guest
Hi guys, I recently brought 2 Gold Rams and from animates on their special buy 1 get 1 free. Anyway when I got them home I went on the internet to find out what sex they were (I do this with all my fish it's just some thing weird I do  ) and found out one is a female and the other is a male. Any way this morning I noticed that the female has a pink belly and I understand that kribs also get a pink belly when they are ready to breed. does this mean that my Gold Ram is ready to breed? I have looked up on the iternet and it doesn't have much info on them just wondering if anyone can help Cam
ryanjury
Before mine breed the biggest sign is the female gets really fat and starts to drop her breeding tube, it drops a little bit at first but within the day of them actually laying the pair go around cleaning areas and "flicking" at each other. Good luck ive had a few spawn's from my 2 pairs but keep killing the babies
Guest
Thanks ryanjury. How long from her belly turning pink until she will lay?
ryanjury
I haven't noticed a change in the pinkness of the belly in mine my 2 females have slightly different colouration I go on the breeding tubes and fatness..
BK
I would agee with Ryan. Colour is sign of sex not that she is ready to breed.
Guest
OK but my female only turned pink this morning and I've had her a week now
ryanjury
Maybe they've only just settled in and coloured up?
BK
She may have come of age or more likely as they came from Kilamates that they are in better quality water. I would worm them, feed them up on White worms, worm them again and then try and breed them. The male can be a real pain as he will want to breed and be at the females all day long and this can lead to problems. I had a couple of Apisto’s and the males where at the females all day long. The females got dropsy and died, before I notice the males had eaten the female and a couple of days got Dropsy as well. They are great fish and hard to breed so best to take the time and put the extra effort in.
ryanjury
Mine spawn like mad and ive had 2 huge batches of egg's hatch however I haven't had any success raising them yet I think I need some smaller food next time I have had no issues with the males being aggressive to the females they are both in mixed tanks so I think that helps as soon as they spawn I take the eggs away from them and hatch them artificially. Mine were homebred from Auckland though they may or may not do better than yours if they're imported.
BK
My Rams are imported so always a risk and usually have breeding pairs in 2' tank so not much room to get away. I've had my Blues for about a year and over that time have had to cut lumps out of the females back and treat with alsort but now she is in a breeding tank so fingers crossed. Got my Golds about 2 months ago so the 2 females are being fatten up in another tank from the male. 1 female has short fins and the other has long fins so will see how things go. Guest
I really want to breed a dwarf cichlid of some sort but was going to try breed kribs (I heard that they breed easily) and try a harder dwarf cichlid once I get board of breeding them. ryanjury
Just feed them up and see what happens I think I killed mine by trying to start them off on microworms and not having a sponge filter in there early enough. I have my pairs in small tanks too but have them with other fish one pair in with discus, the other pair in with albino koi swordtails they seem to keep them busy enough that they dont pick on each other, I have one long finned male and one shorter (but still quite long) finned male very nice looking fish thats for sure Have had no luck with the blues either I got 2 pairs of them as well and lost both males I will be getting some new males soon so will see how they go next time! DutchKiwiCowboy2
I recently got 5 gold rams also with the intention of breeding them. It took them a little while to settle and they stayed fairly pale during that time. The florboards the tank was on were high traffic planks and the vibrations kept them skittish. I haven't had any spawning yet but they have paired off. Have you got any flat stones for them to lay on?
ryanjury
If they want to lay they will lay on the bottom of the tank, if they're skittish add some dither fish and they will come out of their shell's Good luck mine layed on a terrocotta thing I had in there but recently have been laying on the bottom of the tank not good when I want to remove the eggs!
