Fmxmatt
Rumours floating round say these will be available in NZ again in the near future Can anyone confirm or deny? I'd love to have a few (and I'm sure i'm not the only one!)
georgeous
can't you just go grab some from the beach??
Fmxmatt
To be honest, I've NEVER managed to find one despite hours of looking (Must be looking in the wrong places?) Also, as I found with snails, I dont believe they survive long in the heated water of a reef tank
georgeous
borrow someones kids and take them for a walk around the rocks. They will find heaps
OscarBoy
Fmxmatt when my toes have healed up il go to the rock pools and get some 4 u if i see any then post them at your cost
Fmxmatt
Only if they're going to survive in the tank, otherwise theres no point?
OscarBoy
il set up another tank 4 them and keep a air stone and filter in there
georgeous
maybe you could put them in a plastic bag (cold water) and just place the bag in the tank... the temperature change might be gradual enough... any way, its only a hermit crab
tHEcONCH
They are completely different species - the ones you get off our beaches won't survive in a marine tank for very long at all, plus they are comparatively drab. I'd be keen on a proper reef dwelling hermit too.
OscarBoy
oh u want proper 1's..... LOL
Fmxmatt
Shall I attempt to smuggle some back after my Samoa Holiday later this year?

Ira
To be honest, I've NEVER managed to find one despite hours of looking (Must be looking in the wrong places?) Also, as I found with snails, I dont believe they survive long in the heated water of a reef tank Haha, You're doing something seriously wrong if you can't find them. Quick and easy process to find hermit crabs: Look in rockpools. Find snailshells(Check under rocks, etc) If it has legs, you've found a hermit crab. Pick up hermit crab and put in bucket. If no legs then poke snailshell. If it falls over, you've found hermit crab. Pick up hermit crab and put in bucket. If it's stuck to the rock, you've found a snail. Move on. Fmxmatt
Lol Thats prob where I was going wrong. I just assumed most of them were snails
jolliolli
id like some too, especially the cool blue striped legged ones. they are very cool
tHEcONCH
Yep, they are the ones I'd be keen on. I had a little Acro crab for a while - I used to give it a Novotab every few days and it would run around the tank holding it above its head - Wooohoooooo!!!!!!!!!! Fmxmatt
What happened to it? Did Squiggette get pooey with it and eat it?
tHEcONCH
It just died one day - It was a refugee from someone else's tank, so I don't know how old it was - it was quite big, so maybe it was just time for it to go to the big Surimi bowl in the sky... georgeous
 do you need to get bigger shells for them??
Fmxmatt
I always get excited when John ends up with peoples refugee inverts, but now the conversation always starts with "Its a coral eater isn't it?"
tHEcONCH
I haven't had any problems at all - the only thing that kind of irks me (but not seriously) is the urchin - when it eats off the rocks it scrapes all the marine algae off too - it leaves a big white scar. It grows back soon enough, though.
markoshark
What kind of urchin? I have a little green urchin
wasp
Not quite sure of all the facts but I heard Reef or someone has been working away in the background and has got blue legged hermits onto the allowed list. Can you confirm that Reef?
