tinytawnykitten
I was given a black mollie today and he is bullying the hell out of my gouramis. Is this normal? For some reason I expected it to be placid like my platys.
Caryl
They will do this sometimes. Is he your only molly? That may be the problem.
OscarBoy
tinytawnykitten hope the plattys and mollie don't try to cross breed.

Guest
I though all livebearers could cross breed
Dixon1990
i thought it wasnt possible cos mollies are in the genus Poecilia and platy in the Xiphophorus genus. This is just something i read though.so not sure if its true.
Scuba Sam
My understanding is that only Platies and Swordtails can interbreed. I have certainly seen my livebearer males TRY to breed with anything that moves, so its possible that your guy is trying to mate with your gouramis?? I think getting a girl molly might solve the problem, although two girls would be a better ratio.

He doesn't seem to be trying to bite the gouramis, just seems to sidle up next to them and try to snuggle. Does that sound likely? Yes he is my only molly, he was so lovely I had to have him. Jet black with a little blue and orange on his tail.
Caryl
It is why I asked if you have any other mollies. He will be getting "attached" to the other fish 8)
Cricketman
my understanding of genetics is that they can only crossbreed if they have the same number of chromasomes and are a similiar genetically. definition of a species is when a population can only breed within itself to form viable offspring. are the platty/ swordtail offspring viable or sterile like jackasses? (cross tween horse and donkey)
paul_r
Cricketman Bro you were in the same science class as me, crossing your mum with your dad creates jackasses. haha you walked right into that one bro

tinytawnykitten
ok so I have bought him two females, and moved the gouramis to another tank but this morning he has been focussing on two platys in the tank. Both the platys look really fat in fact, one more than the other, but with swollen bellies and the molly is constantly at their anal fin, like he is waiting for something to come out for him to gobble down. I have moved the fatter platy into one of those little isolation nets. What is going on here do you think?
Caryl
It is just what you think. He is waiting to eat the fry as they are born and then attempt to be first to mate with the female (so, he's thick  )
tinytawnykitten
Hmm, well will it help that she is in the little netted off bit now? He can't get to her. Should I expect some fry? She has had a long pinkish (poo?) hanging out of her bum for a bit bit it has broken off now. I am very new to this. Oh dear.
Caryl
A fish can have pinkish poo depending on its diet. She will drop fry every 4 - 6 weeks. When almost due she will be very fat and you may be able to see fry eyes as black dots through the belly. Add some floating plant to the net you have her in as she will eat her own fry as well. Feed them crushed flake.
tinytawnykitten
Thanks for all your advice, sorry one more question. How long should I leave her separated and wait for fry before I just decide it was a false alarm and put her back in with the community? I am dying for one of my fish to breed so it is quite an exciting thought!
Caryl
Moving her too much when she is pregnant may cause her to abort. It is always better to keep her in the main tank with lots of floating plants for her and the fry to hide in. Might be easier to separate the bully.
