CatBrat Posted November 23, 2004 Report Share Posted November 23, 2004 Well they still haven't spawned yet . I don't know why. The female has been full of eggs for a couple of weeks. I have done cool water changes, increased current, decreased current, changed its direction and have been feeding them a good range of food. The male just won't start fanning?!? Have you got any suggestions to get them to spawn? But I have put all my Common Bristle babies in the breeding traps and they see to be doing really well. Cheers, CatBrat. kim Posted November 23, 2004 Author Report Share Posted November 23, 2004 whats your temp and ph? i found having them in a bit lower ph has made them breed more 6.5 to 6.8 is great mind you they have breed at 6 and at 7 but dont play with them to much if you are in the tank the male will not rest and will not think his babies are safe so then he will not breed, i found it best to keep my hands out of the tank as much i can. and you have seen how my cave is set up make sure he feels safe. they will breed again, sometimes the male needs a bit of time out as its him that does all the work. I have the half coconut where it usually spawns, lots of drift wood, and also a tile cave the same as what my Common's spawn in. My pH is around 6.2 and temp around 26*C. On the weekend I decided that I would do one last "rainy" season water change and then just leave them to do their own thing and see if that helps. Cheers, CatBrat. (One of these days I am going to zip over to NZ, con Kim out of a half dozen and sneek them back here). However, I have been fooling around with ancistrus species for more than 30 years, and have tried all sorts of spawning sites (caves). Coconut shells, ceramic logs from retail outlets, home made slate caves, drilled and glued flower pots, PVC pipes, bamboo tubes, 'Woomera rock', you name it. The most accepted and successful spawning site I have found is a plain old clay (terracotta) saucer that they use under flower pots. Cheap as chips and available from plant nurseries or orchid outlets. Just tap out a section of the rim with a hammer, smooth the rough edges with the scrap knocked out and place in the breeding tank upside down. All my breeding tanks have 'full tank' UG filters as well as ancillery filters and these 'breeding caves' have proved themselves over the years. Do not be alarmed if the father lets the cave opening get covered in while he is brooding. When the time is right he will dig himself and the babies out. kim Posted November 23, 2004 Author Report Share Posted November 23, 2004 thats the thing with these fish they are slap happy when it comes to breeding, every time just about the eggs have come out of the cave, the eggs arent as sticky as normal b/n eggs, so thats why i am now useing a discus breeding cone and when they sporn i have to put a rock up over 1/2 of it so the eggs dont get blowen round the tank. they are fun to breed but a bit more work then normal b/n Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

With Discus these days you just fill a beer bottle with sand, stand it in a bare tank, and Discus spawn on it. (Not an original idea, saw it being used in a three story Discus factory in Asia) Works with Angles also. These "Discus Cones" have me intrigued. Alan. kim Posted November 26, 2004 Author Report Share Posted November 26, 2004 thats ok alan_au alot of people dont no what the discus cones are , its from jbl and its a light brown colour , it looks like an ice cream cone but bigger but the great thing is you can clean them and also i have found them great to breed with as they arent sharp inside , i use to use the easter island orderments but they can have sharp bits on them so i changed to the cones. get in touch with your lfs and see if they buy off kongs and if they do they are the wholesalers to get them from, if they are a jbl store like me they will get a bigger discount and should pass it onto you.
