Michelle.g
Another question: I recently bought two 4ft light hoods for my new tank and these came with new bulbs. The first hood has one 8,000 and one 15,000K bulb, the second hood has one 10,000 and one 15,000K bulb. All are 40W. I want to grow plants, are the 15,000K bulbs actually any good for plants? I'm thinking of replacing both the 15,000K bulbs with 6,500K ones. Is this a good idea?

Dixon1990
are they t5 or t8?
Michelle.g
are they t5 or t8? They are T8. I could change the 15,000K bulbs for cheap 6,500K lights now. But if the plants will grow ok with the bulbs I already have, I should just change them the next time I buy bulbs right?
paekakboyz
I've got a similar setup except I had a 1000K bulb and a 15000K bulb in each. I since swapped the 15000K bulbs for 6500K ones and the major change has been algae!! the plants are growing better/faster but I'm still trying to balance out the correct amount of time etc. If you don't mind spending a few $$ on 6500K bulbs from the start I'd do that - then you can tweak the lighting time etc to get the best results Now I'm thinking about having all four bulbs at 6500K and seeing what happens. alanmin4304
It is all a matter of personal choice but I use a growlux (10000K) and a cool white (4000K), tried 6500K for a year but wasn't too impressed so have gone back to that combo. Algae has more to do with water chemistry than light I suspect, or the people with metal halides would have tanks looking like oxidation ponds.
