Caper
Was at the beach the other day with my grandson and I picked up a few rocks to try in my tank. There's nothing particular about the ones I took as I couldn't really take my time to look since my main reason was to be there with Brayden (we had lots of fun ). I didn't have much vinegar so was only able to add a couple of drops to each one and nothing happened, if you think I should get more vinegar to put on them I will? They are presently boiling. Since the beach is on the ocean would salt be an issue? Caper
Caryl
Salt won't be an issue because it will just wash off. They should be fine without more vinegar added. It is the white rocks you have to watch for as they can contain lime. Have you got a local rock and mineral club? They could tell you what the rock was and whether it is inert. OscarBoy
mind my dumbness bvut wat dose the vinegair do?
Caryl
The vinegar test: Pour a little vinegar over your rock. If it fizzes, don't use it as it indicates the rock is not inert (ie won't alter the pH). Vinegar reacts that way to lime.

Caper
Tried to post a pic of rocks but too much trouble, getting disconnected   One is all "whitish" others have white on them, I don't have many or big rocks, will post pic when can. Nope, not club that I'm aware. But didn't you say white has lime, and vinegar reacts with it, I did put vinegar on them all and nothing happened??? tHEcONCH
Quartz, and a whole lot of other things, can look white so white doesn't necessarily mean lime - if they didn't react with the vinegar they should be fine. Alternatively, put them in a bucket of tank water (which you should have tested to get PH etc.) and measure for PH etc again after a week. If there is no change, you are fine
Caryl
Conch is right with both his comments (re white that isn't lime and putting them in a bucket and test over a week).
Caper
Before I add the rocks, should I leave the water sit in the bucket for any length of time before I test it? Caper
