cichlid
Hey all, here are some pictures of my flowerhorn. These are still juveniles, hardly 3.5 to 4.0 inches. The colors and pearl spot designs have just started to grow. The strain is called Neon POTO (Neon Pearl of the Orient) Though many people are against hybrid cichlids, i appreciate some feedbacks. Sorry for the poor quality pictures taken from mobile camera One of my male flowerhorn (3.5 Inches) http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc60 ... male-1.jpg Closeup of same male flowerhorn http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc60 ... oseup1.jpg One of my female flowerhorn (3.5 Inches) http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc60 ... male-1.jpg Another male flowerhorn (4.25 Inches) http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc60 ... male-2.jpg Your pics are far too wide, so IMG tags have been removed. Please adjust your pic size as per... http://www.fnzas.org.nz/fishroom/postin ... t2406.html ...before re-posting. PHOTOBUCKET resizes pics automatically if you set it up. Mod Bill. cichlid
hey noxious, true many pearl spot flowerhorn juveniles are mistakes to be jewels. I'll try to take pictures of my salvini in couple of days. Here is a video of my long fin - red pearl dragon flowerhorn (5 to 6 inches) http://s213.photobucket.com/albums/cc60 ... =pearl.flv
fishy_t
Thanks for sharing, but I do have to say I'm VERY against breeding hybrids on purpose
noxious
Thanks for sharing, but I do have to say I'm VERY against breeding hybrids on purpose on purpose .. meaning isolating in breeding conditions right?
fishy_t
On purpose meaning making an active decision to produce hybrid fish, instead of some fish hybridising in your tank by mistake I think that hybrids shouldn't be encouraged as they risk the extinction of natural species It’s only my opinion, I know there are people here who agree and disagree with me, that’s ok, I just wanted to voice my opinion cause I think they are wrong! ryanjury
I don't like hybrids.. But in certain cases they are ok, ie the OB and dragons blood peacock.. I keep both of these, tell people they're hybrids breed them true, also these 2 have been line bred to produce offspring that are the same etc.. They are no threat to pure species because I will never allow them to cross and if there are any breedings in mixed tanks they are fish food! The hybrids I disagree with are people producing a heap of randoms in their tank matching them up to a fish in their tank and selling them as such, then some poor bugger buys them spends ages growing them out caring for them only to find out their hybrids.. Duncan7
Everyones entitled to an opinion... Where would the world be today without a little gene pool and similar species mixing?
fishy_t
Fair point Duncan, but what I'm talking about isn't the natural progression of evolution - I don't have any issues with that at all! I am talking about the creation of new species BY HUMANS which are causing the extinction of natural species in the wild
Duncan7
Fair point Duncan, but what I'm talking about isn't the natural progression of evolution - I don't have any issues with that at all! I am talking about the creation of new species BY HUMANS which are causing the extinction of natural species in the wild Im aware of both, lots of genetics and biology at uni. Do Flowerhorns naturally occur in the wild ? or are they purely an aquarium human forcedor created hybrid? If its the later, have they been released in to the wild by humans in that case? ryanjury
Yeah I was wondering how aquarium bred hybrids (usually created in china or somewhere like that) can make it into the natural environments to dilute the natural fish? OscarBoy
ryan i use to have a flower horn brought it from a petshop. but ive also got this yellow fish tht is a hybrid 2 lol brought from the same shop
fishy_t
flowerhorns were produced by people, and didn't originate in the wild... Just did some searching and the only problems they have caused so far are within the hobby - apparently within the hobby they have been breeding with some of the species that they originated from (including Cichlasoma trimaculatum and Amphilophus citrinellus ) and now some of these species are almost impossible to find in their pure state (ie without being hybrids of the hybrids!), although people blame this on shops/hobbyists not identifying and seperating their fish properly... Either way I just don't see why we need to create new species of fish when there are PLENTY of amazing ones already! And if someone wants to own a ‘new’ species, just go and find one - there are plenty out there waiting to be discovered!! All said, as I said before, this is just my opinion and I realise everyone has their own opinions and I respect that
