I thought that i should share my experience from this weekend so that even just ONE person might be more careful than I. When i purchased my tank i also purchased a sunken ship ornament, which had half a dozen medium sized holes in the side of the ship for fish to enter and exit when hiding. The other day i noticed my eel was torn to pieces, the top of his back and dorsal fin and one side had large grazes and cuts. I immediately clicked to what could have done this as he spends 99% of his time in this sunken ship, so i took it out of the tank for futher investigation. The inside of this ship, including the inner edge of the enter and exit holes we jagged and sharp, some even had edges that were serated (bad spelling) like a steak knife. After cursing myself for not checking this before the injury happened, i took the item back to the shop which I had got it from and pointed out the shoddy manufacturing and that i felt it was unfit for the purpose in which it was intended. THey kindly took it back. JUST be careful not like me!!

yeah, i didnt think to look, as i thought seeing the item was intended for a fish tank that it would be fish safe. Consumers sometimes i guess forget to be vigilant in checking the quality of the goods. The shop was very helpful on return, and issued us with a credit and let us take heaps of rocks to replace our eels home. I just cant believe that it was sold in such a state though!! Literally like steak knifes on the inside!! Its kind of like the situation that horse bit manufacturers (the bit is the piece of metal attached to the bridle which is placed in the mouth over the tongue and gums) selling bits with sharp bits where the metal was bonded together, leaving the owner with a animal with a bleeding mouth.

In more than 40 years of fish keeping I have never had a "sunken ship", bubbling clam, flatulent diver, or any other Gizmo in any tank. They just aint natural! Aside from plants, bogwood and rock work are the only 'ornaments' I have ever used.

Admittedly there are some great ceramics out there these days, caves, rocks, hollow logs etc. but I still like the natural stuff.
