  1. Next week my hubby and I are leaving Wellington and travelling by road as far as Timaru. Although it is for my husbands "beer" collecting hobby, I also am looking forward to visiting a few "fishy" shops on the way. Can anyone help me out with places that are a "must visit" so I can prepare my list of where I WANT TO STOP ON THE WAY DOWN. All help appreciated. Thanks
  2. Been looking forward to seeing photos of your discus & babies... they are really awesome... congratulations... especially with your survival rate... awesome !!!!
  3. Nice looking tank... and yes you will catch the tank bug as I have done. Started with one small one, ended up with 4 and two outside ponds and still need more..... Good luck with whatever fish you choose.... you will enjoy hours and hours of delight simply watching. Expect to loose lots of time as it flys by without you noticeing. Welcome to the fishroom forum, they are really great here. Loads of help, support and advise...
  4. Yes buzzy, will be selling them once they are bigger. Will let you know when I am no worries...
  5. Babies doing really well. Growing quite nicely... Had to take the mother out luke, she was stressing badly but shes back to normal now. Gees Caryl, never thought of the daphnia being too big... that could be it. I fed it to my other tank of fish and they were fine so that may be it. Will wait a bit longer before trying again. Thanks for that... gives me hope  I have introduced bloodworm and the frozen shimp and it is so interesting watching them take bites... literally bites from such small mouths of the bigger foods. Will do Daniel when they bigger... Cant wait to try out my other pair next time. They have been cleaning and trying to lay but with the other discus and smaller fish have no chance. Oh for more tanks !!!!!
  6. Subject: Discus juveniles Hey are you looking to sell any of the babies? And if so, for how much? I would also pay for couriering. How big are they and what size tank are they in at the moment? In answer to your question Luke, yes I will be selling the discus once they are a bit bigger... quite little at the moment. Not quite a 5c peice so once they are bigger no worries. Leave it a couple of months and then get back to me... they are in a 3ftr tank. Plenty of room to grow. cheers
  7. Child support, I will have you know that the dad almost wasted away to nothing worrying about it but after two weeks now he has come out, glazed eyes are normal and he is the most beautiful colour I have ever seen him. Must have been what he needed to make the "colourful man" out of him... rofl plus I told him he wouldnt have to pay child support lol The mum is back to her lovlely colours and they occassionaly meet in the tank, he does his little shakey dance and she well she watches then they spat, hes at one end of the tank and her the other. Oh well, no worries dont have enough tanks etc if they spawn again anyway. The fry, well, I fed them daphnea and within minutes I had lost a dozen or more, and over the next 24 hrs another doz ... I decided not to feed it again - perhaps it had too much bacteria in it. I cut down on the feedings to 4-5 a day alternating between brine shrimp and micro-worm and put in an air stone and since then havnt lost another one. Have now started to feed them a little flake and blood worm and they are nibbling away at that quite happily. They are all growing well, I do a water change of round 15lts each morning and in in all are really pleased with them (plus myself  ) I have counted round the 100 mark still alive. I think there are another two pair of discus in my tank as well so am quite looking forward to trying them next time round. One is a blue (no stripes) and the other is a blue snakeskin. (with stripes) I have a digital camera... cheapo but works well. Long answer Luke.. hope it didnt send you to sleep...
  8. Opiki is South of Palmerston North on the way to Shannon. I do have pictures but do not know how to get them from my PC to here.. sorry Luke. They (fry) are all doing well. Had to take the father out as he was attacking the mother trying (fighting) to take over the babies... she was getting stressed but now hes gone into another tank... (sulking wondering how much child support he has to pay) she is doing really well on her own. She has taught them to eat from the top as well as the bottom of the tank.. so far I have seen them eat the micro whiteworms and crushed up flake... it is really interesting to watch her teaching them. So far all is excellent...
  9. Father is a blue turquoise and the mother I brought as a brown, but she has always been quite a distint red since I brought her, and as they also had blood red written up on the window I wondered if they got mixed up... anyway, its all to my advantage... I thinks shes beautiful !! And now I have babies. Even more exciting. Thanks Luke* I brought frozen brine shrimp from the FS, but neither the parents or babies would look at eating it so today after the fish show, I called into Hastings and got the eggs to have a go at hatching them myself. Thankfully Cat is not far from me and is going to give me a helping hand to get them going. She also has daphnea so I will start a coloney of my own. Some kind person at the fish show gave me a microworm culture ( I think that is what its called) which I have just got going. I also got some oxeheart and minced that and will grate it when its frozen for both parents and fry.... so all in all with everything on the move lets hope they like at least one of the foods on the menu.
  10. The fish show was fantastic... I had a really good time. Was made welcome by lots of people stopping to chat and give me great advise on my new discus fry. Being a newbe it meant a lot... Enjoyed tea...the auction....exhibition... and friendly club members. Thanks so much to everyone... you all did a great job. Looking forward to the next one, now I know what it is all about....
  11. My discus have had babies and they are just as the books describe.... swimming round and attaching to both mother and father... It is just so exciting.... Can anyone tell me please.... what am I to do next?? In some of the books I have read they say to boil an egg and feed them the yolk, but as they seem to be living off the parents am I to do this or not??? Any information would be greatly appreciated ....
  12. wow, amazing angel. I have never seen anything like it. Reminded me of a childs colouring in.... could sit and watch it for hours if it was in my tank.... green eyed here. Thanks for sharing.
  13. Was reading in one of the discus books yesterday that some discus breeders once the eggs are laid and fertilised they put fine mesh over the cone until they are hatched and that stops the parents from eating them???? was interesting but not sure???? :-? then they are supposed to be all maternal ... :-? :-? The book was good reading...
  14. Sorry to hear about that Bilbo, maybe next time.. Good luck !!

    One eyed Discus

Yes Sue I am constantly testing my PH... as I have had loads of trouble before. I now get my filtered water from Cat and test that most days. Glad to hear that someone else has a one eyed discus that is doing A-okay but sorry to hear he is the one getting picked on Chris.L although it seems that one has to be the "runt"... unfortunately. Know what you mean about kids Joze, just had my grandson 7yrs old staying for the last of the school holidays and his ears are sure painted on. He loves watching the different fish in different tanks but is so noisy and touches (bangs) the glass so he has kept me on my toes so he didnt stress out the poor fish. Hope you are feeling better soon... and your oscar too.

    One eyed Discus

Three days ago one of my discus just went plain crazy, fighting, attacking everything from its own shaddow to the log of wood. He sadly killed my pigeon discus and so I put a partician in the tank to seperate him. At this stage I could not see what or why he had "lost the plot" as all the discus had been togeather for a couple of months or more living peacefully. Tonight I managed to move him to another tank on his own. To my amazement he only had one eye so at some stage (perhaps 3 days ago) he lost it hence ????his real crazy behaviour. He is still fighting everything... glass, plants etc.. He has a bit of white fungus where the eye was so I have treated him and I am hopeing that he will calm down and be ok. Has anyone else got a one eyed discus and experienced any problems with them???

    Discus problem

My smallest discus after being picked on late yesterday, went black and then had what I thought was white spot. So this morning I went and treated the tank for white spot. Tonight Cat came round and said that she does not think it is white spot but is spots of white fluff hanging off the discus even on its fins. (?? some kind of fungus). She is kindly loaning me a hospital tank which I will transfer the discus into but am not quite sure what I should do now... ???continue the treatment for white spot, treat with malifix, do a salt bath ??? do both?? I do not want to cause any more problems/discomfort for my disus than the poor thing already is in... has anyone any idea/s on what or what not to do please. Cat is loaning me a testing kit which I will pick up in the morning ( and test the water etc... if my poor discus is still alive) but the other disus are fine not showing any problems at all.
