Is RODI needed in Chch

Gaza

Recommended Posts

Hi Im looking at getting into Marines after keeping discus for ages.

I'm doing heaps of research but am getting various opinions as to wether RODI units are required for Chch water when doing water changes & top ups for marines.

I see a few on this site are from Chch-what do you do please.

Hey gaza

i've only just started out so don't have much advice to offer but i have been using standard tap water for my salt mixes. I had the same dilemma as to whether RODI was needed. Apart from the usual brown algae outbreak from starting a new setup i haven't noticed any problems using standard tap water, others might say differently though :)

I'm a recent marine convert and like yourself come from a Discus keeping and breeding background - I find that corals respond well to the same kind of care that Discus do - good food, clean water and regular water changes. The water in Christchurch is pretty good - its already very soft and very clean out of the tap - in fact the only thing that you might have to worry about is a bit of residual phosphate that can very easily be removed with a phospate removing compound. I use plain old tap water mixed with Red Sea Pro salt which is made to use with RO water. To remove the phosphate, I use Seachems product. It works pretty well, in fact given that RO water is in some ways too pure (its stripped of a lot of its trace elements) I suspect Christchurch tap water might be a better option. Check out my Red Sea Max thread if you want to see what you can grow in it.

To the eye it might be clean. however it is not good enough for reef tanks,

I had someone measure the TDS of christchurch water and it is far to high in nutrients, even higher than my rain water tank.

I can remember long time ago a thread Layton said he uses tap water and said Chch tap water is some of the best tap water in the world.

However as memory serves, someone else did some tests and found out it depends just where you actually get the water from, some of it was not so good.

Where is Layton anyway, you got his contact Jolliolli? As a long time Chchonian  , he could give his opinion/advice.

Thanks all for your feed back. I am hoping the disciplines in raising and breeding Discus will put me in good stead with marines.

I think I'll go without initially and use our tap water in conjunction with phosphate removing product.

If I'm not happy with the results I'll review my decision.

Cheers
