Hi all, i got a copy of what africans are currently available from suppliers. Due to my lack of experience I am having trouble finding the fish on the cichlid forum species register, can you please give me the latin name to these common names? I would like to see a pic so i can decide whether to get any.

Ps. Zebra - Marble, albino, & ice blue.

Ps. Demansoni & tropheous.

Peacock Marble

Peacock Tangerine

Hi Smidey, I can't help you with the names but I would love to know where you got the list. I keep seeing references to it in discussions but don't know just where this list comes from. I would love to get my hands on one of the tangerine peacocks! :bounce:

i just ask for it at the shop

Hi again, I found the site I first saw the tangerines on http://www.bayfish.com.au/category1_1.htm which also has a marbled peacock which they refer to oa OB (orange blotch) but apparently the colours you get in the marbled strain are highly variable. Both are selectively bred so does that mean they won't have latin names? :)

Ps. Demansoni thats the Latin name

Well put Psuedotropheus in front same

Brad

Am i wrong in thinking these Ps. Zebras are incorrectly named, shouldnt it say metriaclima zebra ....? how are newbies like me supposed to understand what things are if the "experts" (suppliers that i would've thought they know what they are selling) are labelling them incorrectly?

Yeah like I said in my post they're a hybrid no actual scientific name.. And yeah colours can vary heaps also due to the fact they're hybrids.

The zebra's are probably a bit of a mixed bag as to what you actually get alot of them will most likely be hybrids so ps or metriaclima doesn't really matter, theres alot of zebra's that come from the lake "pure" and all look the same with different names anyway so if you try and go from what they were imported and sold as and match them up it gets confusing..

And also importers/stores are probably the worst at naming fish as long as they sell and they make money off them they dont care :)

Peanut do you know what the tangerine peacocks look like?

lol yeah I dont go on anything I see on overseas sites it does not reflect the strain/quality were going to get in NZ... They look pretty much the same as a dragon's blood to me from that site. Guess thats the problem with line bred hybrids and common names.

& dont forget the misinformed suppliers that label them :)

Ok so it's a bit of a lucky dip then huh? How would one go about viewing the fish before you buy them when you have asked the LFS to order it in for you specifically? Don't suppose the importers would send out pics?! :-?

From what you are saying, sounds like it's best to go with local breeders where the hybrids/selectively bred are concerned so you get a better idea of exactly what you are going to get...

Hmmmm, all good food for thought.

Smidey are you going to get either of the peacocks?

From the years of watching here, I wouldn't call them experts.

The zebra albino & blotch zebras could be anything. From a pure species to a hybrid. You wouldn't know until you saw them. Go with hybrid.

Ps. Demansoni & tropheous. I would say if the tropheous has ps in front of it. They have miss spelled the species name. There are Pseudotropheus tropheops.

Peacock marble & tangerines are most likely hybrids.

The tropheus ones mentioned don't exist in a Tang book I have. You would have to wait & see. Why they haven't used a proper variant name. oh well.

The others are as said above. P. demasoni are that,

Orange zeb could be Metriaclima estherae. But you have to view them. The are usually called red zebs. True ones have red tinged eyes.

And the ice blues, should be these Metriaclima greshakei.

Frenchy :D

Like freakyfish said the Tropheus Double star should be Bulu Points...but I do say should be if you were inclined to get some I would want a photo first or a no obligation to buy if they are not all the same.

The Tropheus Firefox should be Tropheus Moliro.....Hopefully they would all be the same sp. too.

well everyone, i was in my LFS store today & asked about these names & guess what. they are right, the store person produced "Dr Axelrods" fish encyclopaedia which had all the zebras etc named as Pseudo....

These are not named as this on the cichlid forum species register so newbies like me have alot to learn the hard way :o

My thoughts exactly, if the shop don't go and buy the latest edition then they wont have the latest names, either way they're only zebra's who knows if the name is actually what they are or if they're even pure.

Most shops will just change the name to "orange zebra" or "blue zebra" when they get in the shops so sc names are lost. And a search under that on the net will tell you what they're like :) Its when people don't label peacocks or other fish they expect to sell for $90 to $100ea that annoys me.

Fortunately (or more accurately unfortunately), since we have such a small variety of malawis on offer in N.Z you don't really have that much to learn. :(
