imsweet
Hi all, looking for some easy to look after plants for the guppy tank. I currently have a small bit of java moss in one corner (weighted down), a plastic plant, some duckweed floating (for the fry to hide amongst) and i pulled some stems off an oxygenating plant out of my pond, washed them, tied them together, and weighted down. They look quite nice for pond plants. But i would like something that looks like grass. ??. something to go in the front/middle of the tank floor for the young guppies to play through. Also it has to be easy to look after and not mind the pet ramshorn cruising over it. Tank is well lit during day and about 24-26deg. Thanks. davidb
what lights do you have. most forground plants like glosso and hairgrass require high lighting. Dwarf Sag should work though (Sagittaria subulata). other easy plants are Ambulia, Anubias nana and Java fern
purplecatfish
For a grass like foreground plant my favorite is Echinodorus tenellus var. "tenellus" but Lilaeopsis novea-zelandiae is just as nice. For the mid ground then Cyperus helferii would be ideal as it looks like a tussock type of grass. Dwarf sag would be my other recommendation for midground as well.
imsweet
Yes ive seen a pic of dwarf sag, quite nice. I'll have a look-see for cyperus helferii, Thanks. I also like that ambulia but thought it might grow too tall, maybe if i plant it behind the filter (in the corner) it could occupy that area? purplecatfish
I've recently decided not to have ambulia (and cambomba) as I'm sick of constantly trimming them, they easily get to 1 metre long in my tank. I would recommend them as starter plants for guppies though. Easy to grow and the fine foliage gives great cover for the fry.
Nicolette
I have twisted val at the back of my tank. and ambulia which I also have to trim constantly but the fry do love it. and sag grass and java fern in the front of the tank.. All growing easily and I am also a beginner. goodluck
imsweet
Hey thanks for that. With the ambulia, and trimming (if i ever get to that stage), do you just nip the top off or actual branches?
Nicolette
i just lop off the top just above the outcrop of leaves and then replant the tip back into the gravel... easy as.
