evil_elmo
Hi i've read that if you double dose flourish excel it will kill black beard algae, my question is how often do you need to double dose? daily? weekly?
Wok
every second day. don't do any water changes untill algae is dead or you fish show signs of stress. If you do too many water changes you are wasting the florish
evil_elmo
awesome, Thanks Wok
Matt
I would do a large water change before you start dosing the Flourish Excel and make sure you only double dose the regular dosage and not the initial large dose. Keep a close eye on your fish and if they show signs of stress do a 50% water change immediately. I lost a few fish last time I tried to double dose. If the Black beard algae is on your rocks and driftwood you can pull the affected items out and pour boiling water over them which gets rid of it pretty quick - don't try this on plants or the tank though . Cheers, Matt
jolliolli
I just did the standard initial and standard followup doses and found it worked on the blackbeard algae fine. took a couple of weeks for it to disappear fully
smidey
i have heard of doble dosing killing the fish. I did standard dose after a water change 7 on the second day the algae turned red, third day it turned white & started to break down
HummingBird
I think the death of the fish would have been from an ammonia spike as a result of all the dieing hair algae. At least, my experience corroborates this theory - I've lost 50+ baby GBA's and a breeding harem to the phenomena before.
alanmin4304
The only fish that don't like it in my tanks are guppies and thay are producing replacements OK. I use at the normal rate and do a 50% water change once a week. I understand that the flourish has an algacidal effect but mainly encourages the plants to grow and therefore strip the nutrient from the algae. I leave the lights on and do water changes to help also. It works but it takes a few weeks.
