SilverBlade86
Was thinking of putting a Krib pair in the tank. Assuming I put enough caves for everyone, would both fishes be happy? Also, tank mates are mostly Swordtails, BNs, Tiger Barbs and some Angels. I don't think the Kribs will harrass the rest of the fish too much, but I'm assuming the "big fish eat small fish" rule applies here. At the moment, my BNs actually don't use the caves at all, and I have no idea where they hide. (Seriously, I've got like 3 pipes in there and they don't use them at all). So I think they won't fight each other for caves. Suggestions and thoughts people?
dimebag
go for it, they will be fine. kribs get a bit protective when breeding, the other fish will soon learn to stay away from their cave.
Ianab
They get on fine. This common is only BN size, they seem to be able to work out their living arrangements without much fighting. And a plecos idea of an ideal cave doesn't allways match ours. But as long as there is plenty of cover they seem happy. Cheers Ian
SilverBlade86
Sweet, I just got a few questions about Kribs then: 1. How do they pair up? Do I have to get a school of them and let them choose like discus or will a male and female in the tank just pair up by themselves? 2. How long do they take to reach maturity? 3. At around what size can their sex be determined? I've been looking around Google for answers, but they don't really answer these questions. dimebag
9 times out of ten if you put in a male and a female, they will pair up. usually you can sex them at around 2-3 cm easy. they dont take too long to reach maturity, normally the ones in your lfs are old enough or not far from it. SilverBlade86
Its 900x450x450, so it works out not that badly I would think. Reasonably planted too.

SilverBlade86
Oh also, if I am unable to find some Kribs from the people here, I think I might just go get them from the pet shops. Do Kribs actually form pairs in the small tanks they keep them in the shops? I would like to get one pair if possible.

Do Kribs actually form pairs in the small tanks they keep them in the shops? I would like to get one pair if possible. The size that they generally are in the pet shops (2-3cm) they are usually too small to sex or be interested in pairing up. Buy about 6 little ones, maybe even at different times so they aren't all from the same spawning and let them grow. After about 6 months they will be sexable and interested in forming pairs. Then sell off the spare young adults 8) Cheers Ian
dimebag
honestly id just go and buy 1 male and 1 female. be very surprised if they dont pair up.
SilverBlade86
I was looking at Critter Kingdom the other day and they only had 1 male in stock. I decided not to buy him because it would be hard for me to find a female his size I think. Not too expensive too, was around $7, and he was about a 2-3 inches. Looked a bit pale though. So thats CK Blenheim, Animates Tower Junction and Organism which don't have Kribs. Grr, it seems that everytime I want to buy a fish it always is hard to find, but if I don't want them they are everywhere.
coelacanth
when I used to have kribs I couldn't do anything with the young because no shop would buy them they were so common. Thats the problem with cichlids.
SilverBlade86
I know they are common, but they look quite nice and are quite peaceful. My tank currently looks pretty much orange and black, as I've got Swordtails, Clown Loaches, Tiger Barbs and BNs in there. I wanna change the colour scheme abit. BK
There's lot's of people breeding kribs so it could become a hassel getting rid of the young. The big O has some nice Apisto's that would be a good option instead of Kribs and i have some as well.
SilverBlade86
But what are Aspistos? Are they peaceful?
Dixon1990
apixtos are a south american dwarf cichlid and they are peaceful.rams would also be another option
SilverBlade86
Hrm, I remember Rams. Any links please?
SilverBlade86
Actually, don't worry about it. I've found much needed info on Google. However, it says Rams would prefer slightly soft water. Will they be affected in my tank?
SpidersWeb
They get on fine. This common is only BN size, they seem to be able to work out their living arrangements without much fighting. Thats not a common, thats a redspot Common's are grey, with light grey markings. But definately Kribs + BN are fine.
